Been following a plant based diet just over a year, no oil/dairy great blood work, weight loss now 152 5' 9", BP 110/70, feel great.

About 10 days I binged on salted peanuts and 3-4 beers celebrating something.....stupid.

about 3 hours later I felt pain in my right toe joint, classic gout I'm told made an appointment with doc but need to wait till next week.

after 2-3 days all pain tenderness gone, feeling like it was gone or an isolated event. I had 1 small glass of wine two days ago no issue, today had half glass of beer and felt it slightly.

I stopped, never had any issue like this before.

JUst wondering until I see the doc on a plant based diet what foods should I avoid, checking online it says not to eat what I'm already not eating.

Any suggestions?

Beer is commonly associated with gout.

From the Mayo Clinic: Drinking beer, in particular, has been linked to gout attacks.

Based on your timeline description, it is probably the culprit. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. :crybaby:

I had a mild gout attack after drinking some wine, I was also a bit dehydrated. Cherries are supposed to help an attack and also to prevent them. I drank a lot of fluids and ate some dried cherries and it was gone in about four hours.

Have you ever been told you have high uric acid level? If not it is probably not gout. Gout is rare on this WOE.

Isn't that what causes it?

Sorry but what is WOE?

Yes, uric acid is part of the process. The uric acid form crystals usually in the joints of the toes, but it can be elsewhere. Gout is a form of Arthritis.

The high uric acid is associated with eating food that are very rich in purines , high proteins. Mostly rich animal food but also to a much small degree, in some plant food too.

Gout is rare in this way of eating. If it exists to my be due to some other underlying medical condition such as kidney problems and some medicine such as diuretics, commonly used to read high blood pressure and congestive heart failure.

Again Gout is rare in vegans unless there is some underlying condition, I would be surprised if a 10 binge after a year of being clean would trigger a gout attack. It take a long time for the uric acid to precipitate into crystals in the joints.

Keep us posted.

My husband used to get gout about once a year. He doesn't eat healthy--eats wahtever he wants. He apparently would rather take medication for his health problems than change the way he eats. So now he takes a medication called Alopurol. Gout is caused by an excess of uric acid in the joints, esp. the big toe. It is caused by foods that contain purines. Here is a list of some plant foods which contain purines:

Asparagus
Beer
Cauliflower
Legumes
Mushrooms
Oatmeal
Spinach
Wheat Bran
Wheat Germ

Of course that doesn't mean that everyone who eats those things will have gout. There seems to be a family connection. Just about every man in my husband's family has it.

The Cure

All dietary recommendations for the prevention of gout attacks strongly recommend avoiding the use of muscle foods. Some authorities also warn against high protein vegetable foods, like beans, peas and lentils. Actually, higher intake of vegetable protein is associated with a lower risk of gout. Therefore, if a patient avoids the animal foods, including some of the higher protein vegetable foods mentioned above will cause no trouble. Based on population studies and the well-established cause-and-effect mechanisms between animal muscles and gout, I (Dr. McDougall) believe the common form of diet-caused gout cannot occur in people who follow a McDougall-type diet

Jimbo, my husband (prior to adopting this WOE) had high uric acid. It stayed at the edge ready to erupt into full blown gout and the tiniest amount of peanut butter in a recipe would set it off. He is now eating healthy and never takes allopurinol or any other prescription medication. He never eats peanut butter anymore. Good luck, I know how you suffer.

I really don't know too much about this, but I work with a woman who specifically avoids peanuts because they always trigger her gout. She absolutely loves peanuts, so about twice a year she winds up doing to herself anyway. :|

Let us know why the Dr think the foot pain might be related. Curious.

Just my guess that if there is an infection the kidney didn't control the uric acid level, I see what he says later.

Ok went to Doc checked urine drew blood all good, sent me to urologist, did urine again with culture, ultrasound all good.

Spoke to Dr Esseltyn, said it makes no sense.

Back tracked what was different.

Guess what it is known side effect to crestor that my regular Dr thought might be a good idea with it's statin protection about 60 days before the onset of this attack.
Now that that's out of my system I'm having a beer.

Oh did I say that drugs suck!
