Any suggestions for someone who desires to love brown rice but currently hates it? lol Is there anyone out there that has over come this? I'm determined to succeed 100% this time!

Thank you :)

There is no reason why you need to eat brown rice if you don't like it. If however you are determined in your efforts you might try to mix it half and half with another grain or legume.
Examples may include;
brown rice and buckwheat,
brown rice and barley,
brown rice and lentils,
brown rice and quinoa.

Note that buckwheat and quinoa only require about 15 minutes to cook so I would add them into the pot with the brown rice after the brown rice has been cooking for 25 minutes or so.

1) If you don't have a good rice cooker, get one. Lots of threads on here to help you choose; I just bought the first one I saw that had a "brown rice" button. In my experience (and lots of people don't seem to have a problem with this, so maybe it's just me) it's tough to cook brown rice well in a pot. Badly cooked brown rice, nobody can like.

2) Experiment with different kinds of brown rice. It's not all the same, in texture or flavor or aroma. The cheapest brown rice (typically sold in a bag or a box as "long grain brown rice" or just "brown rice") is not very flavorful. My favorite is jasmine brown rice, which has a much better texture and flavor. Several different types of short grain brown rice are also better (in my opinion) than cheap generic long grain.

Hope this helps!

I found a way to cook brown rice that makes it soft and fluffy, even long grain... that's all I use.

http://pinchmysalt.com/how-to-cook-perfect-brown-rice/

I don't even measure the water anymore. I use one of cup of rice, rinse it once, then add water to a couple inches or so above the rice. Bring to a boil, reduce to simmer, cook uncovered 30 minutes, drain water until it's just dripping out, cover and let sit off heat for at least 15 minutes.

You could also try to make the brown rice and put in some spice mix towards the end of the cooking time. I've done that when I've eaten brown rice by itself as opposed to having it as a starch base for some vegetable/bean topping I'm using.

Also, if you're eating things like whole grain tortillas, you can put rice in a wrap with other things.

Of course, I'm not the best person to give advice on this, as I LOVE brown rice :D.

I agree with MixedGrains. A good rice cooker with a brown rice setting makes all the difference texture-wise. No more mushy rice. And, while I'm as frugile as the next person, I WILL spring for good quality organic brown rice. I like the Lundberg brand of brown Jasmine or brown Basmanti. The flavor, texture and wonderful aroma are worth the extra cost.

Brown Jasmine all the way. I had to promise my kids that I would never make "regular" brown rice again because they hate it. I have a Presidents choice rice cooker and it makes it perfect every time.

Buying good brown rice is worth the cost. I think of it as my big treat. I keep it in the perspective of the chocolate that I used to buy  I feel special when I do it for me!

Hmmm... You guys have me thinking I need to break out of my long grain habit and try some of these other varieties.

I am another who is a big fan of the brown jasmine but agree with others who have said if you don't like it, don't worry about it as there are plenty of other starches to enjoy!

I have an Aroma rice cooker that seems to do the job. I can't find the brown varieties that you mention in stores, so I will try Amazon.

Thank you for all your suggestions!

Do you like WHITE rice, just not the brown? If so, eat the white. I think Dr. McD is fine with it. He repeatedly says that this is not an all-or-nothing diet (although you wouldn't know that from some of the posters). The Kempner rice diet was white rice only. Asians typically don't eat brown rice, and they are slim and healthy.

I prefer white to brown, so I started mixing the two. You could start with 1/4 brown and 3/4 white. Use the amount of water for the full amount of rice, then half way through the brown rice cook time, add the white. Or, you could cook them separately if need be, and mix them together afterwards.

I love brown rice even plain so my idea may not work...but I cook my rice in a rice cooker with cut up onions, carrots, mushrooms, celery and herbs. I add an extra cup or so of water. Lightly salt on my plate.

Red rice and black rice are also really good. Don't like rice all that much, but when I eat it I prefer black rice.

This is true in that he says that it you MUST eat white rice it's better than other options, but obviously brown is better. I would not encourage someone to eat such a refined product when there are many other options.

As others have said, first try different TYPES of brown rice (not just the crap in the grocery store), try other grains (there is no law that one must eat rice at all), substitute potatoes for grains entirely, etc. Also, many people don't like brown rice PLAIN but are fine w/ it in a soup or casserole. In that case, just don't eat it plain!

I HATE brown rice always have,,always will...I have tried many different types, and to be honest, I really don't care for white rice either....it is not necessary to eat rice on this plan..if you want to..great, if you don't just pick another starch and enjoy it....
