Hi all after the delicious , exoctic recipes for chocolate cake etc. this is a mundane kind of question....How do you keep leaf lettuce or romaine from going brown after washing it??? I usually drain though a sieve, and spread on T Towels to dry out, blotting with another clean towel.......my salad spinner didn't seem to get that much water removed either....so Is there a secret to keeping lettuce I've missed??
After drying I usually store in Ziplocks in the frig.
Thanks for any suggestions Dlee

If you wash the lettuce and then wrap it in damp paper towels, and put it in a plastic bag, it'll stay fresh for a while. That's what I do, and mine doesn't turn brown.

Hi. I usually wrap my lettuce/ salad in paper towels or a thin dish towel. My lettuce will last for a while. I will change the cloth every few days once it gets damp. Enjoy!

After I use the salad spinner, I keep the lettuce in there with a paper towel on top to absorb the moisture. Works well for us.

I absolutely love these lettuce keepers:

They work great! I've recommended them to quite a few people and they love them as much as I do.

Another vote for the Progressive Lettuce Keeper. I've got three of them and they do a great job of keeping salad veggies fresh and crisp. I've had romaine still be crisp and good after more than a week, although it generally doesn't last nearly that long.

Wash and store *un*sealed in the crisper drawer of your refrigerator!

I have a large round light blue Tupperware thing I bought years ago. It has small grooves in the bottom. Keeps my bagged lettuce good for quite some time.

Washing and putting in my crisper un-bagged really works well, except: 1) out of sight out of mind, sometimes until it becomes an unrecognizable and unedible bit of slime. 2) The drawers are hard to open and hard to remove and clean. 3) If there are a lot of items, they get buried.

I am planning to try some of the progessive containers, and storing the crisper drawers in the basement. Then it should be easy to see what is there and to clean/fill one container at a time. I think we will eat more fresh veggies if I can see them and get to them more easily.

That is the plan, anyway.

Edited to add: I now have two containers, I like them so far. They seem a little smaller than I expected, my kale bunch just fit in one, and I had to trim the celery furthur down than ususal to fit in.
