So, I was in love with these potato flake products, but got concerned when more ingredients started appearing on the label...

My question to them;
I'm concerned about the nutritional label on your broccoli fries, the ingredients state diglycerides & canola oil yet 0 grams of fat are listed on the label. diglycerides are hydrogenated fats, what % of your product are they? These are not items I would feed a healthy adult or child.

Great questions below which I hope I can offer more clarity on!

For the Canola Oil:
We use a small amount of canola oil in our Veggie Wedgies as a processing aid to prevent sticking during the manufacturing process. The amount per serving is pretty small... hence the 0g of fat per serving.

For the Mono and Diglycerides:
The mono and diglycerides are found in our potato flakes and are used as a releasing agent when the potatoes are being drum dried. The mono and diglycerides make up 0.5% of the total flake, which is a very very small amount of this one ingredient. Also, the flakes we use are vegetarian.

Not sure if you are aware but the USDA put these types of mono and diglycerides (which are used in the drum drying of food) on their list of ingredients that can be used to make Organic labeled foods. Hope this helps! We do our best to create the best quality and healthiest products we can.

Jill

I am actually pretty impressed with her reply and it was super fast (within an hour). I don't think I'll buy them any more, but I'm going to eat the two bags I have left.

Notice the addition of canola oil & how some of the vitamins seem to disappear?

Well, at least they sent you a reply.
Personally, I wouldn't buy them, because they are processed....I try and stay away from the processed stuff...but to each his own....they are much better than some of the stuff that is out there.

Did you ever see Jeff's label-reading video? It would really help you in this case.

The company told you that although they do add oil they can still say zero calories from fat because of serving size. Did you notice that they new label says the serving size is now smaller than the first label - 57 grams as opposed to 85 grams in the first one? The first one says it contains 4 servings, but the new one says 6 servings, yet each serving still contains 70 calories - they just added 20 calories somewhere even though the serving size is smaller. The oil would account for some of it.

I agree with PotatoHead about staying away from those processed foods. It will make a big difference in your health and how you feel. When you get used to eating mostly "real", whole foods, you notice a lackluster quality when eating the processed stuff.

I have not lost 100 pounds because I would disappear but I think that I know what I am talking about from 30 years of maintaining my weight and vigor.

Be suspicious if the food comes in a package - and if you are going to eat it, please do it infrequently for your health and well being.

And the reality is most people and I don't exclude myself, could down that whole package at one sitting. And even if you do have more restraint I doubt anyone just eats what they consider one serving on the new package. Yet I do see that they are trying and they are much better than french fries!

Veggiesue, nice label work on the serving size! They both are the same weight 4x85 = 340 & 6x57 = 342 so maybe their math was just bonkers the first time around, either way I'm way past ever believing these labels, who polices them? I'm pretty sure they are all 99% guestimations... I'm going to email the owner back and see what they say! SHARP EYES!!!
