I had heard many people talk about yummy sweet potatoes on this forum. I tried Yams locally and didn't like the taste so when I was in Hawaii last week I saw Okinawan sweet potatoes and decided to give it a shot and lo and behold, I liked the taste and think this could be a very good low fat go to food, all you need to do is Boil and voilĂ  it goes.

The couple of grocery stores we have locally like Wegman's, Walmart, Tops, at least i didn't find sweet potatoes that would taste close to Okinawan sweet potato. I think there is difference in Yams and Okinawan potato, correct? Can someone tell me if they found some substitute that closely resembles Okinawan SP?

The only place I've found them is in Oriental Farmer's Markets. They taste great, but I've often had trouble with them going bad quickly or purchasing them and finding some of them are partially rotten. The taste really nasty when the go bad. Another sweet potato I've found which is really good and keeps well is the Japanese (I've seen it as Korean) sweet potato. They have red skin and white flesh with a slight yellow tint. They are very sweet (for a potato) and taste good steamed or baked. I found the purple yams are too dry to bake, they need to be boiled or steamed.

You could try Melissa's Produce online. http://www.melissas.com/Products/Produc ... atoes.aspx You'd have to see if they have any available. The shelf life isn't real long. This site also has them (pricey): http://www.24hourbestbuy.com/okswpo.html There's also this one http://www.sidwainer.com/shopexd.asp?id=934 but the price is pretty insane. $6.99/lb? Did I read that right? Anyway, I've never bought anything from any of them, but I've seen Melissa's Produce online for quite some time.
