Seems like such a great idea - could use jackfruit it in a variety of ways besides this.

Yes, it's been quite a while, but I've tried green jackfruit. I made it with bbq sauce and served it on buns, like pulled pork. I mentioned the stuff in another thread recently. You can find it in Asian markets. If you don't have an Asian market, you can get it through Amazon and probably other online sources. Make sure you get the one packed in brine or water, not the ripe one packed in syrup. Husband would probably love them, but crab cakes sound icky to me. I don't do well with "fishy" stuff. I never ate crab cakes even when I ate meat, though I did eat salmon patties, which I suppose doesn't make any sense.

Anyway, it's good to have options. If you get a chance to try the jackfruit, go for it. Here's the nutrition data:

Thanks Agnes - My mother used to make us Salmon Croquettes a lot, but never had a crab cake either. I assume it's the same kind of thing. It wasn't breaded though.

Healthy Vegan I once went to a vegan Indian place in Culver City and had a jackfruit entree, I really liked the texture. I think it was on Washington Blvd. Sadly though there was oil in it.

Here's a recipe for pulled jackfruit sandwich - you know what to do with the oil

I recently saw a jackfruit at the store. It was about the size of a huge watermelon and the cost was $45. Not for this kid.

The canned green jackfruit used in the "BBQ pulled jackfruit" is only $2 for the required 20 oz can on Amazon and makes 8 serving. That's a pretty good bargain.

$2 plus shipping right? I saw some for $2 with $12 shipping, might be cheaper to head over to an Indian or Asian grocery if you have one.

I also read that if you want to eat the fruit, it's best eaten fresh but for recipes it wouldn't matter to use the canned. http://www.30bananasaday.com/forum/topi ... e=activity

This is the sort of thing I save for when I just need an extra couple of bucks to qualify for free shipping  . That's the best time to buy something exotic from Amazon.

I signed up for Amazon Mom where you get free 2 day shipping on so many items. I'm on a free 3-month trial for free prime shipping.

I was hoping it would be qualified or free or prime shipping, but I didn't see anyone selling the jackfruit who offers that. A lot of them are individual store fronts and ship out themselves. Let me know if you see any of them offering it, I'd love to order it.

Yeah, I have Amazon Prime, but none of the jackfruit I found qualified. But I found some at an Armenian market nearby. Will be trying the jackfruit carnitas in a week or two. I'll let you know how it is.

This site has jackfruit in brine.
http://www.onlinefoodgrocery.com/online ... -20oz.html

It says shipping is free if you buy $75 worth of stuff. Under $75, shipping is $6.99 flat rate. The jackfruit itself is only $1.39 for 20 oz can. I suppose if you don't have an Asian market locally, it might be worth it to look through the site. You might actually find $75 of stuff you'd like to buy. They have canned mushrooms, fava beans, pickled vegs, chutneys, dried beans, rice, noodles, oats, spices, sauces, tea. etc... I see they have the Ahmad teas, which I find at Lee Lee's here. I like the raspberry. I make suntea with it. They even have bamboo steamers and chopsticks, and false eyelashes... if you're in the market for such things.

Well I tried an Indian and an Asian store and no jackfruit, I went a little further to a huge Asian store and not only found the canned jackfruit in brine and water but FRESH jackfruit. I couldn't resist and got a 12 pounder. Will post some pics a little later. I had fun in the Asian store with all the interesting ingredients they have there, and lots of wonderful produce!

Thanks for the link Agnes, will check it out. Yes, it would be worth it in the end to do the free shipping option and do some grocery shopping at home and save gas and time in the end.

Here's a pic of the jackfruit, I got the smallest one they had, cause I don't know if I'd like it. I've had durian before and couldn't stand it and I know this is a relative of durian. My family thinks I'm weird!

Next to it is a young coconut, they are lower in fat than mature coconuts, and I usually just drink the water which is full of electrolytes and very tasty. The meat is jelly like and if I don't use in a smoothie or something I will freeze for another time.
