So I was listening to NPR on the way home today, and they were interviewing people from America's test kitchens (TV show). And one of the tips I heard was that they had studied how to store tomatoes. They discovered that if you stored them unrefrigerated, scar (the part that was attached to the vine) side down, they kept fresh for 2-3 days longer than scar side up. To verify the test they took a second batch and kept them all scar side up, but placed bandages over the scar. Again 2-3 days longer for the ones with the bandages. Apparently the moisture leaves via the scar and not as fast through the skin. So they're advice was if you don't want to bandage all your tomatoes, store them upside down
