First of all, I must say I really enjoyed the book. It has got me back in the game pretty solid and I'm eating well again. So, the book is very valuable to me but...
One thing I noticed that I thought might be a detriment was that Dr M brings up protein very early in the book, labeling it as a toxin. Well, I just got imagining what my dil or my mom would say if they saw the title to chapter three "Five Major Poisons Found in Animal Foods" and then saw the charts listing protein as a poison.
Mind you, I do understand that protein toxicity is a real thing, and I do believe that the toxicity and acidity caused by excessive protein is a major cause of our health problems in this land...but not everyone who picks up this book is in the same place as me (and most of Dr M's constituency)...
what happens when the average person, filled with "common knowledge" about protein being the most important nutrient, and animal protein being the only complete protien, sees such a claim? I imagined myself about five years ago...I would have scoffed and put the book down, never to pick it up again.
Thing is, Dr M doesn't provide any sort of warning..."What you are about to read may shock you, in fact I know it will, because...etc, etc, etc" He just states flatly that animal Protein is poison. And of course he provides a lot of evidence for just that, but again...some people aren't going to read that far. They're just gonna say "Quack!" and put the book aside. That was a thought I had early in the book...
anyway...I'm reading the book and enjoying it. It's getting my mind back in the game, and I'm ready to step into this 100%, no looking back.
the star mcdougaller stories are encouraging (Hi Nettie!) and the facts are compelling. AS always, Dr M uses solid science based information. I want my sister especially to read the chapter on the planet...she won't use plastic grocery bags, but she and her family consume all variety of animal products on a daily basis...
so anyways...

It's good to be getting back in McDougall Mode. I'm gonna skip to the recipes and start playing around there
