today i went shopping with my kids. its not easy for me because i have ms and everything wears me out.

anyhow, i grabbed a salad from mcdonalds cus it was close and convenient. i picked off the grilled chicken and cheese and ate it w no dressing. i figure going thru the drive thru any where it was probably my best option.

what else can i do in a pinch besides carrying fruit or something with me?

Many Mexican restaurants have whole beans and I order a bowl of whole beans and a stack of corn tortillas.
I look for Vietnamese restaurants that serv pho. I can many times get a bowl of vegetarian pho.
Wendys has plain baked potatoes.
We have an app for any android device called Happy Cow that can show vegan and vegetarian restaurants as well as veg friendly places and stores.

I don't have an Android phone but my wife does. And I have converted a Nook Color into an Android tablet and run the app on it. Works great.

What I do when I am out and get hungry between regular meal times is -- stay hungry.

I have found that eating a healthy diet, after at least a few months, eliminated adverse effects that accompany hunger. I do not feel weak, nauseated, or dizzy.

Of course, particular medical issues for some individuals might require "grazing" or frequent small meals.

I'm with Burgess on this point. I've worked hard this last year to accept the occasional hunger pang and ignore it. I don't eat between meals and I fast for 24 to 36 hours a couple times a month just for the discipline. Very empowering. I eat my lunch at 11:30 and may not get home from work and start dinner until 8 PM. No problem. I can go shopping and if I get hungry its OK. So I'm hungry - so what? I'll eat when I get home.

I would be very careful in Mexican restaurants. Refried beans are almost inevitably cooked in lard, as are many other beans. The rice is oily.

I agree that sometimes you just need to say, "I won't DIE before I can get home to get food," b/c let's face it--it's true! Hunger isn't there to say, "OMG! Hurry up and eat or you'll be dead in 10 min!!" It's there to say, "Hey--the stomach could handle some food. No rush--whenever you have the time."

Adjusting your attitude about this is a big part of being successful.

Another part of being successful is planning ahead. When I know I'll be out for much of the day I take along a small cooler w/ cooked taters, fruit, carrots, and sometimes even some leftovers. It's rare that I'm caught with "nothing to eat" and when I am, I just remember that it would take me WEEKS to die of hunger. ;)

ETeSelle is correct. NEVER eat the refried beans as they are always made with lard. But the whole beans are always cooked without added oils or fats. They are usually delicious.

As I noted elsewhere, this is, alas, not true. Many Mex places use lard in their whole beans, or oil is added. Even Qdoba admits that there is lard in the pinto beans but not in the black beans. Never assume! :)

I want to re-emphasise Wendy's plain baked potato and salad. Many also have baked sweet potato, too. Just ask for it plain. I usually get 2 potatoes and a side salad, ask for mustard, and mix that together. I doesn't take any more time to eat than a burger, and you feel so much more full. (BTW, I find that raw veggies make me hungrier, so I try not to eat them when I'm hungry!)

I have also found one Popeye's that has a side of corn on the cob, and it's in water with no oil in it. (The Popeye's on base doesn't have the corn!) I get 3 or 4 pieces of that and I'm happy.

I have not been able to find a Mexican restaurant in Alaska that doesn't cook and serve everything in fat of some kind.

if I'm going shopping in town (an hour away from home), or to the movies, I can find myself away from home for 6 to 10 hours. I almost always carry baby carrots and grape tomatoes with me. You could also have raisins or prunes in your purse all the time (tho' not MWL, they are long-lasting). If I'm actually planning (but you said you were caught out longer than expected), I also carry 3 or 4 small cooked potatoes, which are my best weapon against the munchies.

Me, too. I'm definitely not going to die of starvation before I get home. :)
