I am starting the McDougall program this week. I am very excited about this new venture. My question is I workout at a gym several times a week. I also have a personal trainer that I work out with. My trainer is always after me to do a protein shake before/after a workout along with taking various supplements. Do I really need to do a protein shake and take the various supplements if I am doing the McDougall program?
Also I can use some suggestions on snacks to eat before/after a workout at the gym.
Here are some previous response threads to the protein shake question:viewtopic.php?f=33&t=26377&p=262722&hilit=protein+shake#p262722viewtopic.php?f=33&t=26249&p=261831&hilit=protein+shake#p261831viewtopic.php?f=33&t=27978&p=279623&hilit=protein#p279623
As for having something to eat before you work out, it is a good idea not to go into your workout hungry as if you are fueled up you will be able to work harder and get more out of your workout. Try to keep fueling your engine with more complex-carbohydrates a few hours prior to the workout, then have something light if you need it right before exercise. The goal is to help maintain your body's blood glucose and your carbohydrate (glycogen) stores in the muscles. endurance event. Post workout, just have real food handy that you enjoy: fruit, potatoes, sandwiches, soups -food to replenish and restore your glycogen reserves, so complex carbohydrates an excellent choice, and they always come with a side of protein (naturally, in their structure) so you're good for rebuilding.
I like to keep it simple.
