Ive been reading about metabolism and how it slows down as you get older and we lose muscle mass etc.. Im 44 and feel it may be too late to lose my weight and shape up. I dont expect to look like I did when I was 25 but can I still get fit at my age or is metabolism monster taking over? Help!

Of course you can change! I was 42 when I started in 1998 and I still managed to lose more than 150 pounds. And I've kept it off. I weigh less now than I did then. There are lots of us "old timers" on the board. All you need is the right attitude: Commitment and Consistency.

You can definitely do this. I'll be 43 this coming December and I'm losing really well since being on this way of eating.

Oh goodness, no. You can make changes in your 40's and way beyond. It may be harder and slower to change than it used to be, but that doesn't mean it's impossible.

thank you so much for all your replies. I feel like it may take forever to see any changes but I will certainly try especially knowing lots of you of a more mature age! :)

Of course you can do it! I mean, you're not going to look like a teenager again (unless you are genetically gifted), but you will be healthier and will probably feel like a teenager. I'm almost 62 years old, started McDougalling a couple of years ago. I've lost 60 pounds, gotten off the meds for blood pressure and cholesterol, and feel years younger. As long as you wake up on the green side of the sod, it is NEVER too late.

I am 61 and lost some weight and then gained almost 15 lbs of muscle. Lose excess weight in the kitchen and gain weight in the gym!

I think the idea about metabolism isn't true...since changing to this diet i have noticed a huge improvement on my energy....

Metabolic rate and "energy level" are not at all the same thing. You can have a very slow ie efficient metabolism (get maximum weight gain w/ minimum calories) and tons of energy or a very fast metabolism (the opposite) and feel weak and enervated all the time. Also, vis versa.

I turned 50 in February. In July, I decided I needed to get healthy so I could enjoy the next 50 years. I am easily losing 10 pounds a month, and I am not exercising regularly -- yet.

I've never read anyone post on this board that their age was a factor -- quite the contrary. I've been encouraged by the body transformations at all ages. It seems our bodies want to be healthy and will make great changes if we give them half a chance.

Start today. Give your body a chance to show you what it can do!

I'm 61 and spent 1/2 hour this morning swinging a 54 lb kettlebell around the living room. ("Watch out for the lamp, Dear!")

I'm 47, losing fat and slowly gaining muscle. Harder than in my 20's? Yep. But absolutely, 100% possible.

nope. age is only a number - would rather not claim 59 as mine; but it's infinitely better than the alternative.

i started running last year - can run an hour now without problems...
