Hi John

I have seen this before - very interesting.
At the moment I have two square foot garden beds (just over 3x3 feet each) and they work very well but they are very expensive to set up.

This looks a lot cheaper. I will investigate further!

Thanks for posting this and happy gardening!

Samsy - I love the potato photo.

I have a neighbor around the corner who gardens. Two summers ago he tried that method with some tomatoes. I asked him about it on one of my walks. He said it was a pain to get a hole into the bale.

Over the summer I kept my eye on his experiment. The plants were not as large as his traditional grown ones.

Last year he did not repeat the experiment, ehich makes me think he wasn't happy.

Maybe try it with one bale as an experiment.

I think I will just dig a hole in the ground and plant tomatoes.

I keep getting bigger and bigger plans, but I am just going to do a few tomato plants this first year.

I love all these creative ideas. I'm probably not strong enough to heft the bales around or clean up the mess afterward.

I'm going for the hole in the ground too, John. My biggest job is going to be keeping the deer away. Any ideas, anyone? Fences don't help.

the deer are the hardest part. Even in my area we have lots of deer. I use a spray that was recommended to me - keeps rabbits and deer away. stinks terrible.

I am in the city, so deer or not an issue. My dogs, well they like to play in the area I have planted in. I posted pictures on Facebook, I will post them here:

you have some great fencing around it.

I get cats in it using it like a litter tray. My own cat likes to lay on plants that are just starting out when it is sunny.
