I am surprised that was the only herb you picked up Plumeria. I hope no bugs this time since you are leaving it in.

Kimba you are moving along well. I did get a handfull of sugar snap peas this weekend. My plants didn't do so well this year. I changed locations. I have lettuce and pak choi to pick too. My pak choi is full of earwigs. uck.

Our pest problem is suppose to be so much worse this summer. I think I will be happy to get whatever I get.

I tried to buy a flat leaf parsley plant, but had no luck. Everything here must be greenhouse grown this time of the year. I haven't given up though. ;-) Yes, all will stay inside, safer all the way around that way. The pot is getting plenty of long day sun on the dashboard of the RV.

I would think at the Farmers Markets this time of year that some plants have to be out there for sale. Thank God for those nice front windows :-D

They did have some, but they were so small that it would take a long time for the plant to reach a harvestable size. And since I only have three months tops probably, I'll just buy parsley at the store. See, I have to dispose of the plants before crossing back into Canada to return to the lower 48, customs regulations. The basil, on the other hand, is already harvestable size. And harder to find in the store.

I figured you couldn't bring it across the border.

I was thinking of you. My mint is getting too much sun I think. The lower leaves are dying. I have it on rollers, so I'll try to adjust it. I was going to try and find that dish you make with all the mint. I am not sure if I have enough or not.

Lots of things cannot cross the border. Lots depends on the customs agent as well, on both sides. Their lack of consistency reminds me of the TSA........

This is the recipe. Total cooking time is about four hours, most of it passive.

The lower leaves of mine always got like that, so if that's all it is, I wouldn't worry about it. Doesn't like being overly dry though, if you're not getting rain. I haven't been paying attention to the weather in the lower 48, except that I looked at Columbus (Ohio) yesterday, as it would be about pea harvest time. Nope, the peas would be very unhappy, geez, it's the middle of summer there already!

Thank you. Wow it says serves 6-8 but doesn't seem that much. But I did notice they said it was a snack.

So Columbus isn't doing well with peas either. At least I know it isn't me. I think it's because of how cold it was in April and then bang it was hot.

Oh, it makes plenty, but yes, traditionally it is served as a snack from a roadside type vendor I think. I use it as a dal. Hmmm, one batch serves as the dal portion of a meal for about five times, for the two of us.

Peas hate hot.

This weekend was a gardner's heaven. The weather was in the mid 70s with a wonderful breeze. The sun was hot though. My garden which hasn't had much attention was so full of weeks. So I took advance of the weekend and went on out to work.

I have so many blooms. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that everything produces well. I put out some more green bean seeds. Love my green beans.

Well, I spent last week-end re-planting my tomatoes for the 5th time.
I thought they were finally doing good. We had 2 "small" green tomatoes that were on one of the plants for three weeks but were staying the same size. Then, the leaves browned up and the plant started dying. I mentioned this to a friend and they said they knew someone else who was having the same problems I was having. They dug one of the plants up and sent it to Auburn University to see what they had to say. They told the person that the winter was so warm that bugs were not killed. The bugs had eaten all of the roots from the plant and caused it to die. So, my husband pulled up our tomato plants and decided that was the problem. We bought some plants this week-end and planted them in BIG pots with Jungle Growth potting soil. Hopefully the tomatoes will now grow since they aren't in the ground. Just hoping the plants will have enough time to make tomatoes now. It is now 98 degrees outside and will be over 100 degrees for the next 7 days according to the weather channel. We have not had any rain in weeks. So, we are toting well water to water the garden. The deer ate my okra and started eating my sweet potatoes and green beans. So far, the green beans and sweet potatoes are surviving. The okra was re-planted and has not come up. The Weather Channel is not giving us hopes for any rain for the
next 7 days or longer. So, we might have okra and we might not. This is a first for us. Usually we have people stopping to look at our garden all summer long. A friend of mine hasn't had any luck gardening in the last 3-4 years. This year, their garden looks great. Ha! We have had a great garden for over 40 years.

oh man that is depressing. I hate years like that. The amount of work does not deminish and then nothing in return.

I keep holding my breath on the bugs. Like you, our freeze did not last long enough to kill them.

I'm really sorry about your tomatoes. This would be a good time to solarize your soil and get rid of the bugs. Then, especially if we get some rain, you might be able to plant a fall crop with more success.

Here's a good article on solarizing:

http://www.thisland.illinois.edu/57ways/57ways_15.html

We are just north of you in Tennessee and the drought is terrible here as well. Most crops are pretty well lost.

very interesting. I haven't ever heard of solarizing. I just keep wondering if the bugs move over where it isn't so hot. With as hot as this summer is, this would have been a perfect solarizing summer.

I would love a rain barrel system too--I haven't checked into this at all but think I will online. Kiki please share with us your system and how it works...We have our own well since we live out in the country and so we use it.

I got the Fiskars 5998. It holds 58 gallons, is basically a closed system (less bugs and debris), and a diverter so that excess rain continues to flow out the gutter instead of down the sides of the barrel. It takes a bit of time to install because you have to level the barrel with the diverter so it works properly, but it's easy. The only thing I don't like is the water pressure isn't very strong. So, it works great for filling watering cans and it's OK with a hose attachment, but it doesn't have enough pressure to put the hose on a reel.

Replanting tomatoes for the 5th time, Chrmann! Now that's dedication. I hope the fifth times a charm.

Some of the bugs will move. But you will kill bug eggs, nematodes, plant pathogens, and other creepies.
