Cooking rice is simple enough, but for times when I'm lazy, is avoiding rice a mistake?

That is, would this work: 14oz kidney beans, 14oz blackbeans, 1 cup oatmeal, spices?

Unrelated question: When making french onion soup, what can be used for the cheese substitute? Grated soy cheese seems obvious, but I would prefer to avoid this type of soy.

I really recommend that everyone follow the basic recipe and then once they get that down, they can start experimenting with variations. You can buy precooked brown rice that is frozen, and/or you can use instant brown rice which cooks in 10 minutes, or you can cook a large bath of brown rice once a week and use it throughout the week, including in your burger recipes.
