I'm curious; my family eats at a neighborhood restaurant about once a month that has wonderful McDougall food (excellent steamed veggies!), except that the only grain choices are whole wheat bread and white rice. I know brown rice would be preferable, but given the choice which of these should one choose? Thanks for your thoughts!

I second the white rice. Lower calorie density and no added salts, fats or other unknown stuff you may not know about. Often times whole wheat bread is really white bread with a little coloring and whole wheat flour and is mostly refined.

My guess would be white rice, as, even though it has had the outer layer removed, it is still intact. However the bread is ground to flour, so it has a higher calorie per pound ratio. And remember, some of the healthiest ppl, ie the Chinese, eat only white rice as their starch staple. Of what I have understood from Jeff, is that brown is preferable for everyday, but white is not as bad as "they" say it is and is fine if that is all that is available.
....

just my opinion, but then I am not Jeff either.

Excellent opinion!.... and I couldn't have said it better.

To clarify and few points though...

The answer really depends on the persons health/medical issues and their goals and overall progress and the details of the WW bread and the white rice.

I also want to clarify that I am not recommending white rice in any way, and that if this is a somewhat regular occurrence, then my recommendation is to find a restaurant where one can get the choices we do recommend.

Thanks for the input; very informative. I agree it's best to get brown rice whenever possible, but it's also good to know how to rank foods when the occasional situation requires a compromise. Thanks again! :)

I have some confusion about white rice. Dr. McDougall says something negative about white rice in one of his books I read and he did the same in a newsletter indicating it should be avoided. However, in one of his DVD's (Made Easy or Made Irresistible) he says white rice is okay, afterall it is a staple in healthy Asian cultures, but brown rice is better for you.

Comments often have to be evaluated in the context of which they were made in to better understand them.

Brown rice is the preferred choice and we should be doing what we can do maximize the preferred choices in our life as often as possible.
