I am so happy that you got this wonderful hike in with your Son. Thanks so much for sharing this experience with us! Being able to hike some again is I think the best achievement so far for me because of this WOE. I couldn't before because my fibro and arthritis pain would increase so badly during and after that I just couldn't dare to do any walking at all! I still have plenty of pain, but not the type that keeps me from sleeping nights, so I am again walking regularly for exercise, even a few trails here

I used to hike daily until the fibro and backpacking was my favorite vacation. I haven't done these things now for well over a decade. My last hike was with my Aunt in Kauai and the pain was so bad I didn't think I'd ever get down the trail - she, 15 years older than me, just bounced happily down the trail an hour ahead of me - I could not move for two days afterward!
But now after the change in eating, the pain does not increase terribly with exercise for some reason. Though, my left knee is not too happy with the walks I am doing now, the swimming helps soothes that! I am just so happy that you found that you can do this now too. What a great accomplishment and what a fantastic trail to get to hike, wow!
