Today marks a milestone that excites me as much as any other I've passed, and more than most! In fact, I think I am happier over today's accomplishment than any other I've reached so far!!

I did my first push-up today! It wasn't pretty and it wasn't graceful, but it was all mine! I have been trying to do a push-up since April 23rd. Back then I couldn't even hold a plank position for very long and I couldn't lower all the way down without collapsing to the floor. The best I could do was to lower some and hold for as long as I could and slowly work my way to being able to lower all the way. Forget about getting back up!
Until about a week ago the best I could do was lower all the way. Then I could come back up just a tiny bit... hardly noticeable if you were watching, but I noticed! In the past few days I've been able to come up just a bit further... and today, just as I was about to quite and congratulate myself for coming up a bit further than ever before I realized I was still moving... so I gave it all I had and before I knew it I was all the way back up!!
So today, June 21st, 2012, the first full day of Summer, a mere 17 days after starting DDP Yoga, weighing in at 295 pounds(unofficial), I did my first push-up in more than a decade!!
I credit the DDP Yoga as much as anything else. It is really building up my strength. I am pleased!

Your post almost made me cry. I know what an accomplishment that is! I have had so much difficulty with my knees and feet that anything physical is awesome. :-D Keep up the good work. Do you go to yoga classes, or do them on your own? I've never tried yoga, but The Wellness Center here in the Columbus, OH area has yoga classes. It is a low fat, vegan wellness health center run by well-known speaker and naturopathic Dr. Pam Popper and Chef Del Stoufe who is writing the new Forks Over Knives Cookbook.

Thanks everyone for the kind words!

Jackie, I do DDP Yoga, which you follow along with at home in front of your TV. DDP Yoga combines elements of yoga, isometric exercise, dynamic resistance, and a few other things. It's not traditional yoga, but it works wonders!

Is it a TV program or DVD? I'd really like to check it out.

Go check out this post in The Lounge. It has a link to the DDP Yoga website and a link to an inspirational video about one man's total transformation thanks to this yoga program.

Well, ain't that the cat's pajamas! I'm hoping you're doing a good ole fashioned Steve Martin "Happy Feet" dance!

This is what I love about yoga - you can struggle so much to learn a pose (darn those chatarungas!) and the next thing you know you're doing them like you own them!

Milestones, I love them.

You're doing awesome!! I 3rd, 4th, 5th or however many, in saying I'm glad you stuck around. You are definitely an inspiration to us here and whoever else reads this journal or your blog. Keep up the good work.

Weight Loss Update: 07/01/12

I don't think I mentioned it here on my journal but I've switched weigh-in day from Wednesday to Sunday. The reason being that I can now weigh-in on my home scale and can choose whatever day I want to do it, and I choose Sunday!

The scale reports a loss of 5.0 pounds in the past two weeks, almost a pound short of my goal of losing 1% of my body weight per week. I am, however, thrilled with this just the same, as I have conflicting issues tugging my weight in different directions!
First there is the losing of excess fat, which of course, makes the scale go down. But there is also the DDP Yoga exercise program I'm on which is helping me build muscle and strength, which wants to make the scale go the opposite direction. Here is how this has affected my weight:

14 days ago: 298
11 days ago: 295
7 days ago: 300
Today: 293

As you can see I continued to lose weight after last weigh-in, but then shot up to 300 pounds. It's steadily come down from that over the past week and is now at 293.

Everything else in my life has been very consistent. Food intake, exercise level, etc. I continue to improve at the yoga, my strength and stamina are increasing, so there is obviously some muscle gain that is happening. I am pleased with this. It wasn't long ago that I couldn't do even one pushup. The other day I did two in a row!
I am inching ever closer to the 200 pound mark. I'll be there before I know it! I do not have any big celebration planned for that occasion. I am busier than ever doing all the things I couldn't do until recently, and that, to me, is the most fitting celebration of all.

No need to tell you you're doing great, Norm, but you are setting a great example. We are noticing strength and flexibility gains with the yoga, as well. This week, we're adding the Red Hot Core to our exercise schedule.

Way to go Norm , you've found the key obviously and it is really fun to hear how well you've done. Thanks for keeping us updated Dlee

Ps You have the same name as my Dad :D He could really benefit from this way of eating too, but I'm afraid I'm the only Mcdougaller in my family. They think I'm some kind of nut case! Oh well I keep on getting healthier and skinnier! :-D

I wont update my weight ticker or graph because it's not my "official" weigh-in day... but today I reached the 200 pound weight loss mark! It will almost certainly be more than that come weigh-in day, so in case I ever want to know the exact day I hit the 200 pound mark, it's today!

It was a bit less than 8 months ago since I hit my first 100 pounds. 238 days ago. That's an average of 0.42 pounds weight loss per day since then.

It's been over 20 years since I've been this light. Long enough that I honestly don't remember what it's like to have this much mobility. It's all new to me! Every day is like Christmas!

I'd like to thank Dr. McDougall, who's made a life work out of educating anyone who will listen to the wonders and simplicity of nutritional truth.
I'd like to thank Jeff Novick, who's explanation of calorie density gave me the most valuable tool I have in my weight-loss arsenal.
I'd like to thank some Star McDougallers who have been of particular inspiration to me, among whom are Mike Teehan, katydid, and frozenveg, as well as other forum members whom I've found to be sources of inspiration and support, among whom I can quickly list are Kirk, pinkrose, gramma jackie, chile, Debbie, Rosie, and everyone else who has ever offered their support along my journey.

200 down, another 100 to go!

Yea! Congratulations! YOU are one of MY inspirations. :) So happy to hear of your amazing success! Of course, I shouldn't be surprised since this way of eating works!
