Lisa's willing to believe

Postby willing2believe » Sun Aug 01, 2010 6:13 pm

Ok, so I have been doing a partial McDougall for the past several days and I am willing to commit. I tried the program back in the early 1990's with good success- of course after I got thru the withdrawal and started feeling great I quit, as is typical of me. I remember about 12 days of feeling like I had the flu last time- so far nothing but a low grade headache this time, maybe I'll get lucky.

So, a little about me. I am 44 (about to turn 45 in about a month) and weigh 305.8 as of this morning. That is down about 4 pounds from the last time I weighed several weeks ago. I have a long way to go, both in weight loss and in modifying my diet. I lost 143# 6 years ago and got down to an adult record of 184 but gained it all back about 4 years ago. I lost the weight that time by changing how much I ate but making few changes in what I ate. Not only do I eat the typical SAD recently it has become 3 fast food meals plus a snack at starbucks a day. Not only can you tell that on my body but in my wallet also.

Health wise I am doing far better than I deserve with the way I have abused my body. I am overweight and have some mild to moderate arthritis but my BP, cholesterol, and blood sugars are all within normal limits. I mean who deserves a total cholesterol of 135 eating fast food 3 times per day. Oh well, I know that that will not continue if I don't get this under control soon. I do have some GI problems that are most likely IBS but my doctor hasn't sent me to a specialist about that. I do know that that is diet related.

I am a physical therapist who works with the elderly and I went to a course last year on functional testing measures for the elderly. When it became time for someone to practice the tests with me being the guinea pig I found that I rated at "at risk" for a 70 year old with my outcomes. That is terrible for a 44 year old. I did begin exercising at that time (but have taken most of the summer off from exercising) but it has taken a year for me to be willing to work on the food.

So today-
B- 1 1/2 cup brown rice with salsa and 1 cup steamed spinach
L- 1 spring roll, veggie and tofu stir fry with brown rice
S- baked potato with salsa
D- is about to be either steamed asparagus and another baked potato or I am going to make up a SNAP meal we'll see.

So far I am feeling great and having very little side effects. Here's to beginning.

Welcome Lisa. I too started out at 305 pounds and am currently at 147. So I can tell you this program works. :-D The biggest change I had to make was to always bring my lunch to work and to never, ever eat food in the car. That pretty much broke my fast food habit. Now if I want to get, say, a Taco Bell bean burrito, I have to get out of the car, stand in line and eat it in the restaurant. In short, I have to think about what I'm doing. I look forward to your posts.

Thanks for the encouragement Kate. I had to laugh when I read you comment about eating in the car. I spend the majority of my day in the car and you guessed it, that's where I eat most of my meals. I will definitely keep that in mind.

Well, I made it thru another day. Didn't feel well this morning and almost didn't go to work. Started to eat my breakfast of brown rice with steamed spinach and was nauseated- so of course my first thought was "I can't eat this, I guess I'll just go to McDonalds for my normal breakfast." Good thing I realized that didn't make much sense- I just went without breakfast. Lunch was a bean burrito and dinner was my first SNAP meal. It was pretty bad. I have a lot left over so I better figure out how to season it better for future meals.

I also need to find a way to get more veggies into my day. I am sure that getting a variety of veggies in is important nutrition wise. Oh well I'll figure that out. Darn, just remembered that I didn't pick up any B-12 at the store. If I am going to make this work and be healthy that is a requirement. I think it's time to order one of the books since I can't find my last one. I went by the library to see which ones they had and found none of them. Oh well, I can download the quick and easy cookbook on my nook and will have to order one of the others.

So, I'm counting today as a success.

Your doing great Lisa!!! Great job on smashing that Mcdonalds thought, I used to be the same way. Took a while to change my thinking too....

The SNAP: Hmm, whelp I'm not sure what to say, add some tobasco sauce, salt, pepper and fix that baby up. I'm sure someone else will have some good ideas...

Veggies are a big part of the mcdougall program. I buy huge bags of frozen veggies and then I heat them up on the stove or microwave and I eat them with my starch. Or I'll make a fresh raw salad . It's also good to have raw carrots, celery, cucumbers, bell peppers cut up in water, so you can easily grab them.

As far as B12, do you know if your low on it? It's best to get tested before going on any supplements. I don't have the link to it but if you were a previous meat eater your B12 may be good for 2 years or longer, so they suggest getting it tested to see if you need it. No need taking something you don't have a need for yet eh?

Thanks for the info. Yeah, I'll try different seasonings over the next several days and see if I can get my SNAP meal to turn out good instead of simply edible. Not that there is anything wrong with edible. The only problem I'm having with veggies is simply the volume of food and the simplicity of what I'm doing. I already have a plan to change this tomorrow-I'm sure it is simply a need to create a habit and pattern.

Thanks for the info on the b-12. I didn't realize that I could be good for 2 years. My original plan was to schedule a physical with my doctor in January or February and let her know what changes I've made and make sure there aren't any health issues I need to be aware of with this. I can get her to check it then or see when she thinks I should get it checked.

Today went well. I tend to be a perfectionist and am trying very hard not to let that trait hinder my ability to stick with the program. When I look at all of the ways I could do the program better I need to remind myself how many changes I have made. In the last 5 days I have: stopped eating meat, stopped eating fast food, stopped eating cheese (I love cheese!), started allowing myself to eat starches until I am no longer hungry and I am losing weight without many cravings. That is good enough for today. I can work on the other issues in my food (fats, getting enough veggies, taking my lunch to work, decreasing sodium, increasing variety of meals etc) one at a time as I need to.

So, today-
B- 1/2 sprouted grain tortilla with 1 TBSP raw almond butter
L- 1 bean burrito from Moe's- beans, rice, salsa, guacamole on a whole grain tortilla
S- 1 baked sweet potato
D- 1 baked sweet potato, 6 ounces steamed fresh green beans sprinkled with fig infused balsamic vinegar (that was really good), 2 strawberries and 5 chunks of fresh pineapple.

Lisa,

I can be a perfectionist too but I learned if I was ever going to get healthy that I needed to let go of my perfectionist personality. It did take me baby steps and I also gave myself lots of room to grow. I never made a mistake (I don't believe in mistakes) but always learned how to improve my compliance with the program. I hope the same to you too. One day at a time and remember you never fail unless you stop trying.

Forgot to take my lunch to work today. I know I never take my lunch to work but today I was going to. Because of that I realized I can eat mostly on plan (at least as far as I am currently on plan) at the local barbecue place and it was good.

B- baked potato, green smoothie (spinach, almond milk, frozen banana)
L- baked potato with barbecue sauce, steamed broccoli, cabbage salad
D- brown rice with salsa, sugar snap peas and hummus

It was a good day. I keep saying I am going to start exercising but it's hard to work up the energy when it is 80+ degrees and humid at 5am and 100+ and humid later in the day. I hate treadmills but should go and swim laps. Oh well, my workout partner will be back from vacation next week and I am sure we will get started doing SOMETHING whether I like it or not.

Sounds like your doing great. I don't have a link for it but I can get it later for you if you want..But it is said that a smoothie should not be included until your at a healthy weight just because you can consume more calories in a smoothie than you can ever sit down and eat. So it's better just to have the whole spinach and the whole banana. Just a suggestion. I know some people still have them and enjoy them. I just wanted you to know the information as I know your new to the program!!!

As far as the lunch thing..Is there a way you can take a couple bags of frozen veggies and put them in the fridge at work and then reheat them in the microwave? Or take and put a couple of raw potatoes in the fridge at work.....That way if you forget your always prepared..

Your doing great..Keep on keepin on

Thanks for that info. I know that I can't eat them alone for breakfast, like some people can, I just stay hungry. Maybe I'll save them for a treat when others are eating icecream or making milk shakes.

Yeah, this weekend when I do my grocery shopping I will take things straight to the lunch room at work before I head home. I haven't been going back to the office for meals telling myself I don't have time between appointments and that's why eating out is a better option. But, when I think back to the last time I lost weight most days I was able to swing back by the office and only occasionally was too far out in the field to make it back. And I cover a much smaller territory now so...

Thanks for the thoughts.

Didn't make it online yesterday. It was a long and frustrating day at work, I just came home, ate and went to bed. I did, however, have a couple of triumphs yesterday. The first was at our Thursday morning meeting. We had a vendor come in and provide breakfast and of course they brought my favorite- Chick-fil-a chicken biscuits. I swear they put something addictive in them :D . It never even crossed my mind to eat one. I looked at the table and saw the fruit tray they brought and thought "oh, that looks wonderful" and ate fruit. I even passed the chicken biscuit by when someone handed me one. Didn't even feel deprived. The second positive was at the end of the day. I was exhausted and had no desire to come home and cook what I had planned for dinner. So instead of using it as an excuse to get my normal fast food dinner I called ahead and ordered take out from my local Chinese restaurant and got steamed veggies and rice. It was just as quick and much better! Yesterday was a success.

I have not been feeling well the last several mornings and have eaten very little for breakfast. I've been amazed that I have not been hungry until almost lunch time.

Today I had-
B- brown rice, mixed fruit
L- 2 bean burritos
D- baked potato with spaghetti sauce mixed with a bag of mixed veggies, pineapple
