Did anyone see this headline?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070131/sc_ ... NlYwM5NjQ-

I know this is not diet-related, but this is one small measure DH and I did last year when they came out with the daylight compact fluorescents. We switched all our bulbs that weren't already fluorescent and quite love the light. We did see a drop in our electricity bill too. Our local hardware store was selling the bulbs at one point at 6 for $20 Canadian so we loaded up. DH even switched a few fixtures so they would look nice and we donated the old ones to Habitat for Humanity as there was nothing wrong with them.

Anyone else change their bulbs?

Okay, I give up. I thought this would be a simple, non-controversial subject that would unite us in one common goal. Ha!

Carroll, I am sure there will be exceptions for people who require the traditional bulbs on medical grounds. But for now, I am going to torture you with the following:

:!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :!:

Nah nah nah nah nah nah.

(Sorry, I am just in a silly mood.)

Relax. Someone in the legislature proposing a law to that effect is not the same thing as the law actually being passed and signed by the governor. The headline was "California may ban conventional lightbulbs by 2012" which I think is really pushing it. As far as the article goes, there is one legislator pushing this. To say that California IS going to outlaw the bulbs is really speculative at this point.

I just moved into a new apartment and replaced all the bulbs with CFLs. That includes 3 regular ones with the bigger 100w output, a recessed spotlight, 4 40w bulbs in the bathroom with 60w daylighters and an outdoor globe light. I now have the brightest porch light in the complex.

The daylight CFLs in the bathroom are great, an 80w equivalent light output boost with the 4 and still using less power than a 60w bulb.

The only really noticeable laggard is the recessed spot above the sink, it takes a minute to "warm up" to full light level.

For the 9 of them I spent $32 catching a sale at Home Depot. Will I make my money back before I move out? Maybe. At least I can make a little dent in my energy use in the interim.

I've been switching mine out as the old ones die. I can't bear to throw something away that is still usable (our toaster is ancient) but I am slowly but surely switching over. I"m not hugely fond of the light itself but I'm getting used to it.

Interesting!

I must admit I don't know my lightbulbs...this is groundhubby territory...I don't do oil or lightbulbs...sorry...I should learn about it.

Anyway, I, too, as CArroll has said, don't feel my best in certain flourescent lights, although there must be different kings. We have flourescent bulbs in our kitchen and they don't bother me, but in my office they keep me feeling sleepy...and there are certain stores I go into, only if it's dark outside...and my eyes play tricks on me and I feel weirdly hyper and sleepy at the same time...no headaches, but some of those lights do something strange to me, mainly if it's dark outside...sounds bizarre, but it's true.

We have a lot of those LED lights (don't ask me any particulars...I'm totally ignorant; I just know groundhubby calls them LED) for areas where we don't really need a lot of clear vision...like where we wouldn't read or work on something hard to see, or anything like that. Supposedly they take little energy and last forever. I also have windup flashlights with these LED lights in them that I use to take care of doggies' needs.

Sometimes here at work I find it necessary to turn off my lights and just do computer work in the dark, just so I can stay un-sleepy! Not like the work is exciting enough to keep you charged up... --it's weird too, cuz I'm not a person who actually sleeps much or can sleep much at all...but certain lights just seem to go directly to my ol' groundhog brain!

I know a lot of people who get onto that freecycle thing!

Happyalyssa: Make sure you get the daylight compact fluorescents. They have a much more natural tone of light. In fact, I prefer it to the Heat Emitting Low Light Source (HELLS) formerly known as the standard lightbult. We took our old lightbulbs to the EcoDepot where they will be turned into reflective paint for highways.
