The many little things that we do every day/week to help the environment and to help stop global warming can add up and do a lot more good than we might realize. What LITTLE THING have you done today or even this week?

Below is what I did today. In the scheme of things, it was not much -- but like I said above, “Little things add up!”

This afternoon, my stepdaughter threw a little party for her older son’s birthday. Since her father’s (my husband’s) birthday is the day after her son’s birthday, the little get together was for BOTH of them.

I knew that she was going to serve SAD cake and ice cream, so we brought over some of the McD-legal/global warming friendly (fat-free, part whole grain, VEGAN) chocolate birthday cake (containing pumpkin puree in place of eggs, milk, oil) that I made for my husband. Except some refined sugar and some white flour (which are OK to have on “feast” or “special” days), this cake was VERY healthy, delicious, and earth-friendly. We also brought over a small container of fresh fruit, instead of ice cream, to eat with the cake.

To top it all off, we RODE our BICYCLES to her house (about 4 miles) with the cake and fruit in a small cooler strapped to the back fender of my husband’s bike.

The thing that amused us the most, at the party, is what my stepdaughter’s other son did! He is only (almost) three and he PUSHED AWAY his little plate of SAD cake and ice cream and kept asking us to hand him grapes and strawberries from the container of them that we had brought. Of course, we were more than happy to hand him the vitamin and antioxidant rich fruit!

After we got home, my husband remarked, “Little kids KNOW what’s good for them!”

By the way, I used to visit the McDougall Message Board often and post here on a regular basis. However, for the past year, or so, I have been using what little free time that I have to learn about virtual 3D art, animation, etc., and have not had the time to visit and post here as much as I used to.

I am NOT very good at this 3D “stuff”, yet, and there is MUCH more that I need to learn about it. However, I am trying to do some “good” with what little knowledge that I have of this art form, with what few tools that my very limited budget can afford, and with my huge collection of downloaded freebie 3D figures and props that I have backed up on DVDs.

All of my 3D “creations” that I have uploaded to You Tube (and other sites) are free to view and are free to download for personal use. However, they are NOT to be used in anything commercial!

For any one interested, my YouTube channel is stinkbugb2008. My very first 3D animated little video has been on YouTube since last June. It is titled “SAVE OUR PLANET” and it mentions the McD plan along with MANY other things that can help “save our planet”. My second one is titled “The Beatitudes” and it is NOT McD related. It was made for a very religious friend of mine who introduced me to the art form of 3D posing and animation.

Currently, I am working on another little video that I HOPE will be finished by this fall. (I only have a few hours in the evenings, that I am home, to work on my projects -- so they take quite a bit of time to complete.) In this new video, I will stress the importance of REUSING/RECYCLING things and the importance EATING what is GOOD for BOTH US and our PLANET. This will be mixed in with a LOT of what I HOPE will be comedy.

There is even a character (in one small part of it) in it named DR MACK NOODLE! He advocates eating and living healthy and in a way that is good for the planet. (Can’t image WHO HE is BASED ON??? Hahahahaha! I hope Dr. McDougall will NOT be offended! He shouldn’t be. The animated character is somewhat good looking and is VERY CUTE!) Dr. Mack Noodle will be celebrating his 92nd birthday by VIGOROUSLY DANCING to a little tune that I composed and played and recorded using a halfway decent CHILD’s keyboard and the free Audacity Audio program. My song is NOT very good -- but there will be NO copyright problems with my using it!

Unfortunately, if you look closely at my first two uploaded videos, you will see some little jerky places in them, in some spots, where the 1 to 3 second-long little 3D clips were joined together into one video. The other day, I FINALLY figured out what the problem was! The program that I am using to join these little clips together is cutting off either both the first and last frame of each little clip, or parts of these frames, or maybe just either the first or the last frame. So, for now on, I WILL add some extra (same first and/or last) frames to the little clips to try to solve this jerkiness problem. (I still need to figure out WHICH and HOW MANY extra frames are needed -- but I plan on running some little experiments, soon, to find out.)

SO -- If you-all don’t hear from me for another long spell, you’ll know I have been up to.

Also, I am still mostly MWLing, still doing some exercises most every day, still keeping the weight off, and I am still very healthy and physically fit. I just LOVE McDing!!!

Happy McDougalling, everyone!

I prevented some old sheets from going into a landfill by turning them into a rag rug. :)

That's awesome, SB!

Next week I'm taking books and clothes to the charity shop rather than throwing them away. (I can't believe people just throw this stuff out.) I'm also going to turn some old jumpers and sweaters into cushions for my bedroom and start up my (organic) garden again now that it's getting warmer. That doesn't really help the globe but it sure does make the creepy crawlies happy.

Oh, and last week I got everyone in the house to organize a little "used batteries only" bin so our batteries can be disposed of properly.

WOW! Responses in just a few minutes after posting!!! THANKS! It is encouraging to know that folks are doing things to help!!!

That is a PRETTY rug! You made something useful out of something that most people would have simply thrown in the trash can -- NOT even the recycle bin. That is GREAT! :)

Also, taking clothes to a charity shop not only helps the environment but it helps the POOR, as well! Plus, I wish EVERYONE would separate batteries from their trash and dispose of them properly! AND organic gardening DOES help the environment (and possible global warming) because man-made fertilizers are NOT used -- and I assume that these fertilizers are manufactured in a factory that give off global warming gases.

Thanks for responding so quickly! You two just made my day

Aww, no problem SB :D

I love it when people reply quickly and enthusiastically on message boards. It's exciting :P

I found this blog a few weeks ago. It's perfect for the crafty and eco-conscious: http://hautenature.blogspot.com/

There's so many ideas there it practically buzzes.

-started 24 tomato plants and 24 green pepper plants from seed
-repainted our outdoor light fixtures instead of buying new ones (they
(look brand new now)
-hand washed my dishes every day
-recycled all cans, bottles, boxes, etc..

So, thats just this week..many of these things are on-going. Peace!

Way to go, LJ!

Thanks for sharing!

Today, I solar cooked some potatoes which are supposed to be a very good food choice for McDing and for taking care of the planet.

I had wanted to solar cook my husband's birthday cake (mentioned in the first message in this thread) but the day before the party was rather cloudy. I did NOT want to risk messing up his cake -- especially since I knew that many NON-McDers would be looking at it, watching us eat it, and would be welcomed to sample some it, if they wanted to.

I hope many more of you share some of the little things that you have done to help save our planet! I even hope that some of you who have already posted will share some additional things, if you want, to keep this thread ALIVE -- indefinitely! :D

Your posts are very inspiring to me because I thought everybody had lost interest in the global warming forum. Plus, your posts just might even inspire some others to do some plant-saving things, too -- so please do NOT be shy about posting about what you have done!!!

PLEASE share!

Many thanks!

P.S. I should have mentioned (in the first post in this thread) that I used one of groundhoggpeggy's (or Groundhogg's from a while back) songs on the NON-McD related video that I uploaded to YouTube. It is from her CD, "Patchwork Collection", and she gave me permission to use it. I think she and her daughter have lovely voices and that she is a fantastic guitar player/banjo player/etc. If anyone is interested or curious, she has uploaded some terrific videos of her music to YouTube for the public to enjoy!

SB...I sooooo want to get a solar cooker. I've looked into making a solar oven and just haven't done it yet.

I guess I should also add that I'm a religious composter. This week the hubby is making a bat house and a worm composter. :D

As a sidenote, we live in a neighborhood in the suburbs....all these things can be done without living in the country. :D Just had to add that, because so many people think they are limited in the suburbs. Not true!! So many things we can do..........

You are doing a LOT! That is GREAT!

This afternoon, I washed a FULL load of laundry in COLD water (using borax and only a little bit of detergent) and hung it out on the clothesline. (From late March to about early Sept., I often hang out laundry in the late afternoon/early evening and let it stay out all night and get it in the next day in the late afternoon/early evening. This is because the sun's rays are very strong this time of year here in northern FL. During the winter months, I make an effort to get plenty of sun for Vitamin D but, here in FL, one can easily get too much of a good thing during the warmer months!

Of course, I am a McDougaller and total vegan. My husband is not a total McDer but he eats McDougall food at home. So, foodwise, we are doing our part to help stop global warming.

If you are a Paul McCartney fan (like I am -- hahahahaha!) just go to YouTube and search "Paul McCartney vego" (spelled with an "o"). He advocates going "veggie" to help the planet (and as a way of showing compassion toward animals) in a few DIFFERENT videos made at different times. BUT I am not sure if he means vegan or vegetarian in them. I have been informed that he is NOW vegan after being a long-time vegetarian.

But, anyway, I think it is GREAT that he is advocating diet as a way to help stop global warming!!!

AND -- If you really want a good laugh, search "Paul McCartney mashed potatoes" on YouTube. He demonstrates how HE makes mashed potatoes (clip made a few years ago). The potatoes were not McD-legal but at least he used NON-hydrogenated margarine (implying that it was NAUGHTY to use it) and part skim milk (saying that soy milk was ALSO good to use). I wish he knew about McDougalling!!!

Happy McDougalling!

You reminded me to take some old batteries to the recycling bin at the library!

Have been taking boxes from the garbage at work, going to use the cardboard for my walk ways in the vegetable garden. Also started a recycling program with the coffee shop at the Y...I'm going to be taking all their coffee grounds for my compost bin.

I'll think of something for next week. Husband is starting a worm composting bin as soon as the worms get here.

What I've been doing for the environment for several years is something I rarely encourage other women to do, but I've been thinking lately that I ought to start talking about it more. If you are pre-menopausal, read about Glad Rags and the Diva Cup and consider never buying disposable pads and tampons from the big corporations ever again.

I've been using the Diva Cup for 4 years and I love it!

You all are doing lots of great things!

I am too old for the glad rags but I don't feel old -- thanks to McDougalling and a little exercise! :)

I have been doing lots of things since my last post, too, but nothing much new -- like solar cooking, using compact flourscent light bulbs (but turning them on ONLY when a light is TRULY needed), doing laundry in cold water and drying it on the clothesline, eating a vegan-type diet (McDougall version), my husband and I combining several trips into one to reduce the amount of gasoline we use, bicycling to places, etc.

One thing that I have been doing for a while, but have NOT mentioned, is allowing rinse water, from doing the dishes, to collect into a dishpan (instead of letting it run down the drain) and saving this water in buckets. I use this fairly clean water to flush the toilet by dumping in half of a bucket (to make the "flush") and then by pouring in the rest to fill the bowl to the correct level. I also collect the water that I wash fruits and veggies in (or just their rinse water, if I have to wash them with dish soap to remove pesticides -- when I can't get/afford organic ones). It is AMAZING how much water, that would normally go down the drain, that can be easily collected and be used for the toilet!

AND, yes, this DOES help with global warming because we have a well and an electric pump. The less the pump runs, the less electricity is used! Of course, composting toilets are supposed to the best way to not to have to waste and "pollute" any water at all (in the restroom)! I don't have one of them -- but they sound very interesting.

Also, when I wash root veggies, pulled from my organic garden, I wash them outside, in a bucket, and use the water and the rich organic dirt, washed off of the veggies, to help water and feed the garden. Plus, I collect rainwater, in barrels, to use for watering the garden and houseplants.

This all helps reduce the amount of electricity used by the pump and helps stop the waste of precious, clean well-water.

Keep up the good work!

SB, I think you and I are kindred souls.....

GREAT idea with the dish water. I always feel like I'm wasting so much water in my kitchen sink. I also need to start washing clothes in cold water, I don't know why I've always felt the need to use warm water. ??

My BIG thing that I really want to do is replace all the windows in our home. Home is only 13 years old but the windows are horrible. As soon as I can get the hubby on board...we're gonna do it. He's thinking money, money, money. And I'm thinking money saved, energy saved, etc. We are going to install a whole house fan in the next month or so, should keep up us from running the a/c as much. I'm happy with that.

Nothing new this week really...just same as always. Although I am looking into getting a push reel mower. :D
