I don't know if I have this or not, but I have had scalp sores for a few years that won't go away. I've been to my dermatologist about it, and without actually looking at the sores, he prescribed a 6-week antibiotic course. At the time, I was thrilled to hear that he thought it was a bacterial infection (not gluten related) and was happy to follow the regimen. Nothing happened. The sores did not budge. When I want back to the doctor, his response was to put me on antibiotics for 6 months (again, without actually looking at what's on my head). I asked if he could at least test me for DH, but he said there's no way to do that. Of course I know there is.
I am not comfortable with a 6 months antibiotic regimen, so my question is, did anyone with DH have it on their head and if so, how was it diagnosed? Do I need a new dermatologist? Any experiences with this would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Mindy
Those antibiotics could damage the healthy bacteria in your intestines and give you diarrhea.
Then you would really think you had Celiac Diesease. Usually dermititis herpiformis is on the arms and legs, but it can also be on the face. You may or may not have Celiac. Only an intestinal biopsy can prove if you do or not. You could try an elimination diet for awhile and see if not eating any gluten containing grains or products that contain those grains makes improves your condition. But before you do that I would go to a dermatologist who will actually look at your scalp. It could also be bed bugs or dust mites.
