I recently got wheat gluten'd. My question is, does anyone have any suggestion as to how to help speed along the process of healing your gut? The best I know of so far is drink water and don't eat any raw fruits/veggies. Does anyone have a suggestion that works for them?

Loveskale:

I met a yoga instructor, also a science/technical writer at a party this last weekend. There was gluten free vegan food there for both of us as we both have gluten problems. She told me this: papaya contains the enzymes that will protect our guts from gluten. I believe she takes papcin (?) pills when she eats out, as you never know.

I found my resolve to stick to the good foods lapsing after a glass of wine and some brownies called my name, sigh. BUT there were these great mango, papaya & pineapple kabobs, so I ate one of those and tried the brownie right after.

Seriously, I fully expected repercussions from the brownie and nothing at all that night or the next day. I had, however, had problems with some noodles just a few days before, which weren't supposed to be in the Chinese restaurant soup I ate. So, I know for sure just a little tiny bit will get me.

She said it will, for some, help neutralize a problem after the fact - but I haven't tried that myself. Probably depends on the exposure amounts. Anyway I am going to obtain some of these pills because I find restaurants are very dubious in regards to really knowing what's in your food.

Also, things happen in the kitchen too. I got a piece of chicken in an oil free vegan wrap last month. Even though the list of ingredients was carefully spelled out on their menu. I found out from a friend that the new guy in the kitchen thought he'd improve it by doing the rice in chicken stock. Go figure.

I sure hope people have a tried and true answer to your question, thanks for asking it!

Good luck I so feel for you -- Michelle

Hello and thank you for your responses :)

I've read digestive tune-up, maybe I need to re-read the section on celiac more carefully.

I find raw fruit makes things worse for me, I had an organic apple this morning and it was as if I had eaten a slice of bread. It just aggrovated everything. But thank you for your suggestion.

It really frustrated me today, I ate a nice filling lunch (my Costa Rican stew recipe), and even though my stomach was stuffed, I was still hungry. I haven't had a reaction this bad in quite a while.

I find that a pre-emptive chugging of lots of water really helps. Do it as soon as you realize you've been gluten'd, and the later you drink it the less effective it is, but it still gives some relief. I was just wondering if there was anything food-wise I would do, since some things I eat are bothering me and my meals aren't filling me up. After 24 hours, I am losing my appetite.

Too bad I can't see a doctor! Most doctors know so little about it.

Oh for sure raw fruit would not be the thing once we are aggravated, I should have stressed that this stuff comes in pill form and concentrates the enzymes. So maybe it would not stress your situation more in that form. I just ate the fruit because it happened to be there. I guess the main thing is to take the pills before we unwittingly get a batch of something that could do us in!

I didn't know there was anything that would help.

Only one time since going gluten free did I accidently consume a very small amount of gluten. There were breadcrumbs in a dish that someone brought to a gathering, and I didn't ask until after I'd had a few bites.

That one small exposure was enough to bring back my dermatitis herpetiformis for 6 weeks. Whew.

I've always been super careful before and since that episode. I'll never knowingly consume gluten again.

Yeah, turns out someone washed a pan that had been used to cook mock meat (almost pure wheat gluten) and I think just cooking things in pans that I used with that same sponge set me off...It doesn't take much and I'm kinda glad to hear that I'm not the only one!

I don't get dermatitis but I get very sick for a long time.

Oh, and yes, drinking water and avoiding raw helped, just a bit! :)

How did i miss this one. Okay my tried and true is celery and or lettuce. They always help relieve some of the symptoms. The gastro intestinal ones any way.

Celery is especially effective. I am wondering though if spinach chard and kale would also help.

And then there is taking ACV. That seems to stop the acid reflux part of it.

Wow, loveskale you are really sensitive too! I feel nervous even having any gluten in my house. When my fiancee's two teenage daughters come to visit, they practically live on wheat - sandwiches, bagels and pasta. And they're supposed to be avoiding gluten too!

So this last visit I got gluten free pasta and asked that they eat their sandwiches and bagels outside the house, and they were totally fine about it, thankfully.

Years ago I was using Swheat Scoop, a cat litter made from wheat. It suddenly dawned on me that I was breathing it in, and probably consuming a small amount of it from my cats walking on the counters, etc (disgusting to think about, but probably reality, even though I'm a neat freak.) I used to get achy knuckles when I'd scoop the box, and my face would get all itchy. I switched to a corn based litter, and afterwards didn't experience either of those symptoms again. Duh!

That makes sense about the Swheat scoop, I think the respiratory tract works that you end up swallowing a little of what you breathe in, so I can see how breathing in dusty gluten'd litter would cause a reaction.

Thanks Kitty, I find raw foods make my stomach worse, but I will give it a shot! :)

Hi loves kale. I knocw what you mean about raw but for some reason the celery works. And also lettuce ..ice berg or romain.

I have no idea why.

Allso but i know some people cant do it eating an apple also helps.

Like tonight i had a bean burger from a restaurant. So i had lettuce , a bunch with it and after i ate it i added an apple so in case there was cross contamination maybe it would minimize it.

Of course i had brought ait home and had it with some of my gluten free bread. So far so good.

No irritation.

Anytime I have any type of food reaction I use the following product

http://www.pureformulas.com/trisalts-20 ... mulas.html

It is called Trisalts and it is a combination of potassium, magnesium and calcium. It reduces the ph level of the blood, reduces acid and helps calm the body down. I have found it to be a God send.

Good luck

Jessica
