Hi DianeR,

Thanks for the links and info. That was interesting!

You know, today I went into a large Wild Oats store. First time in a long time I've been there. Wow! I couldn't believe how many gluten-free products they had, from crackers to breads to baking mixes, brownies and cookies! I never saw all this before! PLUS, there were signs all over the store marking the GF items. I NEVER saw so much emphasis on GF before. I was super impressed. Either it has become more of an issue to their customers or...? Do you guys think GF is almost "popular" now, the way vegan was the last time I was in a big place like that? I was blown away. 8)

There is definitely more awareness of gluten now. I remember when celiac disease was thought of as something very rare and striking children with very particular symptoms. Only fairly recently have doctors in this country realized it is probably the most common genetically-related disorder, hitting all ages with assorted symptoms (or none at all). Well, doctors that keep up with the literature anyway. I've heard that, on average, it takes 11 years for someone to get diagnosed.

Then you have some doctors realizing there is such a thing as non-celiac gluten sensitivity or that the classic marker of celiac disease is too narrow to encompass the full spectrum of adverse reactions.

Put this increased awareness with the power of the internet, some books on diet like Dangerous Grains and The Paleo Diet, people reporting feeling better on Atkins, etc., and businesspeople are bound to notice there is a market. It does seem like a lot of the food out there is being sold by folks with celiac. For instance, the woman behind Breads from Anna, the mixes I have on my shelf, is celiac.

I never would have put things together had it not been for reading what folks like groundhogg have said here and Dr. McDougall's last book (which indicated once again that my digestive system wasn't, and never had, operated the way it is supposed to).

I hope it doesn't bother you, groundhogg, that I think of you everytime I have a nice bathroom experience

I wish we had a Wild Oats store around here. I've read about them and I'm jealous. But I can't say I've investigated all the GF offerings in every store within easy driving distance of me.

So far I've done mail order from four different places. It seems like no one has everything, any more than my local stores. So I've added a section to my food journal where I put my reviews of gluten free items and where I purchased them.

Looks like now that Whole Foods bought up Wild Oats, the Wild Oats name will be history pretty soon. Sad, because variety is the spice of life! Next time I'm in Whole Foods, I'm going to see if they have the same emphasis on GF foods. I've never noticed it there, but who knows? Maybe I just wasn't looking for it?! :-)

I agree that groundhogg has been an awesome resource on this list! Coleslaw had sent me her bread recipes even before I was able to log in here. Then I read a lot of her old posts to gather more info. :)

I enjoy mail ordering (except for paying for the postage!). I love the thrill of the hunt on the internet, then it is fun getting packages in the mail. I'm just like a little kid! :D
