I know, this is all we need for our time management, right?

It didn't seem like there are very many of us here. So I went searching and found: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Vegan-and-Gluten-Free/

I just got my membership approved, so I haven't had a chance to do any searching through the messages. But there are 819 members!

I also found a vegetariangf group, but I haven't been approved for that one yet.

If you join, you will see me as "hathor42," once I go through past posts and start posting myself. I always like to see if certain things have already been discussed before I ask something.

Forget it. There are thousands of posts so I've just jumped in. It looks like all posts have to be approved, though, so my words of wisdom aren't showing up yet

Hi DianeR, Thanks for the link to the gluten free vegan group. Do they seem to include oats or not on their gluten free menus? I still tempted to try oats but I've avoided them so far.
Have a good day Diane!

Interesting! I will check that out after our meeting this morning here in a few minutes.

Is this a group you have to join? Cuz that just makes me nervous...I've tried joining knitting groups, etc., and I can't ever seem to make it work...I'm pretty technologically challenged...

But I would like to get on there if I could. I have not had much contact at all with other vegetarians/vegans who are gluten free too. This has been frustrating to me...most celiacs seem to eat meat (although many find they don't do well with dairy), most vegans eat gluten...you kind of find yourself fumbling somewhere in there...not feeling as much camaraderie as you would like!

I will check this out after our meeting, during my lunch hour today...I hope I can get on there!

Okay I'm outta that meeting...heating up my lentil stew, and trying to get onto this thing...it says it's looking over my information, but I am trying to get the "profile" set up and now I'm totally confused.

I guess I'll just wait and see if I get an e-mail from them and see if I can figure it all out and get on there.

It sure would be nice to find a community of gluten-free vegans! :P

Well it's just about time for me to wrap things up here and get on outta here...and I never did hear back from that yahoo group...so I don't know if I did something wrong or not...

...looked like to me you can't even see the messages unless you manage to join the group... :(

Wonder how long it takes 'em usually to get back with you??? Cuz I don't know if I did it wrong (again! as I said before, I've tried these things for other yahoo groups and never did do it right) or not.

You would do better getting on the forum and asking for yourself :D

I did a search using the word "oat" in their message archives and there were over 300 hits. Looking at some of them I saw some discussion like we've been having here and some recipes using oats (usually with substitutions noted). So some use oats and others either can't tolerate them or don't want to chance it. Maybe you can join and start a poll on the subject  You could also ask on celiac.com.

There is a recent study on the subject mentioned and a very expensive source of supposedly uncontaminated oats. Someone else mentioned that they use Irish oats, because the UK has better regulation in terms of preventing cross-contamination.

The new study is not definitive. The CD patients were eating oats in the European Union, so they might have been purer than here. A group participating in the trial dropped oats because they felt uncomfortable continuing. The remainder were tested after five years I believe it was and there was no difference noticeable in their small intestines than that of the group not using oats. (Does this measure everything? I don't know. Also it would have been nice if they had tested those who dropped out ...)

It all depends on the moderator...this is something that a person has to go in and manually do, so if, say, they don't check this group account while they're at work, it'll happen this evening or later.

I wouldn't worry...there is usually a delay...PM me if you have problems and maybe I can help; I'm on yahoo groups already and plan on joining this one, too.

About oats --

The FDA has a rulemaking proposal out to allow companies to label certain foods as gluten-free (doesn't apply to those foods that are naturally so). There is a long discussion about oats in there:

About signing up --
Have you signed up with Yahoo groups? You have to establish an account with them first, including a confirmation of your email (they email you and you click on a link in that). Then you sign up with individual groups, some of which require moderator approval, including the two I mentioned. If you have reached this stage, you would have seen a message that your application for membership in the particular group has been submitted and awaiting moderator approval. If you haven't seen that, you are stuck earlier in the process.

;Well, once again, I seem to be too technologically idiotic to accomplish this.

I would love to be able to get onto these kinds of groups and learn and share and all of that...but I can't seem to ever make it work  !! :-(

Groundhogg,

Have you tried getting on the Vegan & Gluten-Free yahoo groups again? I wish I could help you. Seems if I was able to get on that you should too. I am computer illiterate. I'm on a few raw food groups and the Bates eye site. Although I visit their home page now, as I no longer have an interest in the raw food movement.

I am finding out a lot of good info. Having my question answered. Giving out websites. Just hoping to see you there too.

Lois

:-( I just don't get it.

I've tried knitting groups, crochet groups, music groups, etc., and now this one is no different...I never hear anything back or understand what sorts of hurdles i'm supposed to be jumpting to get aboard...Yahoo does not like groundhogs, apparently!

Groundhogg,

I don't understand this. Not unless it shows that you are using a company computer? Do you have a home computer? Also, my dh has Juno connections and I have free yahoo email.

Here is an address for the Yahoo outfit. By mail: Daniel Dougherty, Copyright Agent c/o Yahoo! Inc., 701 First Avenue,, Sunnyvale, CA 94089

By phone: (408) 349-5080 By Fax: (408)349-7821. And by email:
copyright@yahoo-inc.com

Seems all I did was fill out personal info, and match the letters & numbers thing, that I hate.

Well, do you know someone who could help you figure this out?

Best wishes,
Lois

I don't know of anyone personally who gets on these yahoo groups...I wonder if my computer here at work somehow blocks stuff like that?????

I could try to see if my daughter could get me going some time if she's at our house...she could try from there. But since I am limiting myself to one e-mail address...it would be the same one as what I've tried so many times from...I have 3 or 4 e-mails addresses now...and of course, one is work, the others drive me mad...i just like having the one that I use all the time.

 this sort of thing generally drives me crazy  but maybe I'll wrangle groundhoggie the next time she's over and see if it works from our home computer. Groundhubby knows a lot about comptuers, but he has no experience on website message boards, let alone these user groups. I think all of that scares him :P . Maybe one day I'll manage to get on there :) .
