Mammography Screening: Truth, Lies and Controversy [Paperback] By Peter C. Gotzsche, MD

Hi Everyone,
I have recently bought the book that Dr Mcdougall recommended and am agahst at how crooked and corrupt scientists get. These same top scientists, who are totally corrupt, use any measures possible to publish their views in top journals, like Lancet and BMJ. How on earth does this happen? How do we as lay people ever know what is correct? This book is excellent, but reads like a horror story. I still find it hard to grasp at the extent of lies and misuse of good science.

Has anyone else read the book? After reading half way now through the book, I looked at the American Cancer Society page on breast cancer and was amazed to see what they have there.

"Current evidence supporting mammograms is even stronger than in the past. In particular, recent evidence has confirmed that mammograms offer substantial benefit for women in their 40s. Women can feel confident about the benefits associated with regular mammograms for finding cancer early. However, mammograms also have limitations. A mammogram can miss some cancers, and it may lead to follow up of findings that are not cancer."
This is complete rubbish. I know they have lobbies etc and am still amazed at how little worth our lives are to these associations who are claiming to help us.

Looking forward to hearing from others
Best, Julia

How do scientiests get so corrupt? Easy. To put it bluntly, "it's all about money." Why do drug companies push their pills? It's all about money. And why do doctors push tests and are free with their prescription pads? Easy. Always remember IT'S ALWAYS ABOUT MONEY."
So what's one to do about it? Simple, do your homework. I remember well when my doctor diagnosed me with osteoporosis. The Physicians Assistant was quick to say my doctor wanted me on fortea. This is something you inject yourself with once a day. Well, I quickly said "no." She then gave me a list of my other options, all pills naturally. I said "no" to those as well.
I am so grateful that I found the book The China Study and other books about osteoporosis. After reading those books I learned how we really get osteoporosis. IMMEDIATELY, I changed my diet. And in the process of all this I also discovered this web site.
To this day I am amazed that the FIRST question she should have asked me was "What are you eating?" But she NEVER asked me that!
I have come to the conclusion that most doctors know little if anything about healthy eating. So if you want to stay healthy, focus your eating on a whole foods plant based diet. And as far as yearly visits to a doctor? I haven't been to mine in quite a few years. The way I figure it I'm probably better off. Sure wish I could find a doctor in our area that knew something about healthy eating, and was not quick to get out their prescription pad, but so far no soap!

Yes, I read the book too. I actually posted a response to you but it was lost - I don't know how but Jim actually sent me an email to notify me it was lost.

I wasn't surprised, but saddened by the politics of science.

Have you read Should I Be Tested for Cancer?: Maybe Not and Here's Why by Dr Gilbert Welch? This is a very compelling book.

I also recently posted about a film DH and I saw last weekend, Pink Ribbons, Inc. http://www.nfb.ca/film/pink_ribbons_inc_trailer It's available as a DVD or you can download it. This movie doesn't address any of the issues in Dr. Gotzsche's book - instead it takes you inside the fund raising issues and how they raise enormous amounts of money but very little goes to discovering the root cause of cancer.
