Dr. McDougall's GMO article draws from a wide variety of sources and condenses a great deal of information into a manageable size which makes it very balanced and informative.
My perception is that the primary goal of concerned consumers is to get into place a mechanism for tracking GMO's in the food supply. This seems crucial since the long term consequences of GMO's is unknown and could be catastrophic. Individuals who wish to avoid this experiment need an easy way to do so.
The rationalization of the GMO industry that labeling will scare consumers is unsupported by the facts. Labeling GMO's is required in most of the world without ill effects on sales. As any first year marketing student knows, a sure fire way to increased product sales is labeling it "new and improved". The failure of the GMO industry to label their products along with the true claim "new and improved" may well go down in history as the marketing blunder of all time. To the contrary, it is not labels that will scare consumers, but the reluctance of the industry to label them which implies manufacturers know bad things about GMO's they are afraid consumers will find out.
Voters should not be confused by the truth or falsity of the blizzard of arguments about GMO desirability from considering the essential soundness of labeling them which Dr. McDougall seems to agree with.
I would modify Dr. McDougall's statement "Our future depends upon us taking actions based upon today’s facts and not upon tomorrow’s fantasies." to the following. Protecting our future depends upon us taking actions based upon both today's facta AND tomorrow's possibilities. Afterall, the long-term consequences of GMO's is still unknown which means hazards may well exist that may be discovered to be fact, not fantasy.
