I am a newbie and have been one for a long time now as I keep starting over. In my heart and brain the McDougall plan rings right in my head but, everytime I try it I keep running into the same problem. I am a Type II Diabetic for 12 years now. At 63, I fight this sugar MONSTER all the time. The Glucophage slowed down and wasn't keeping the Glucose readings down any longer. The normal average person pumps insulin at about 14 and I am reading at 84! Why would you give an Insulin resistant diabetic MORE INSULIN??? They put me on long acting Insulin pen injections at night and by the time I worked up to 12 units, I felt my heart skipping and feelings of wanting to pass out. I have taken myself off the poison and my sugars are the same as when I was on it.
My question to anyone who wants to answer is when will the sugar readings start to drop on this plan? I start it and eat according to plan and the next day my readings are in the 300s!!! I get scared and keep going back to the protien. If I stay on this plan long enough, will they drop? How long do I push thru these high readings before I see some results. I would really like to do this but, sugar that high scares me. I am open for any comments and suggestions from all of you.
Thank you for being here.

Have you read Dr. Barnard's book about Type 2 diabetes? That might answer your questions specifically.

Also, exercise is supposed to help your cells become less insulin resistant.

If you have weight to lose, when it starts going down, you should also see improvement.

There are many McDougallers and followers of Dr. Barnard's program who have reversed their diabetes.

I suggest also watching Benjamin Eksouzian's story on the Star McDougaller's page.

My mother is Type 1 and refuses to change her diet. She is blind in one eye (the other eye's vision is very bad now) and has lost a leg.

I'm confident with diligence in this way of eating you will be able to avoid that fate.

Thank you Caroveggie for the encouragement. I just get so scared because from the first meal without protien my glucose starts rising and when it hits the 300's I get very scared and feel terrible. Then of course the doctor has a screaming fit and wants me back on the Glucophage that makes me feel terrible and hurt like I am 90 years old! Right now, I feel scared and lost not sure what to do. My reactions with the sugar spiking on veggie meals is what holds me back. There are so many people on this plan, I would think there has to be others that have experience these sugar spikes in the beginning of their McDougall journey? I will read the one you left me. I would love to hear some encouragement to just hang tough for a week or two and it will resolve. I lost 32 pounds since last October and there has not been improvement in the glucose reading. :\
