Hi everyone! I'm fairly new to McDougalling, but have been at it for about 3 weeks now, trying to follow MWL. I say trying because sometimes I eat 3 or 4 fruits. :)

I had a question about the Boca Burgers. Is it okay to have one once in a while? I know they're processed so I'm guessing that is why they're probably not an approved food, but they are tasty! :D

Welcome aboard, Mrs. Potatohead. I would consdider a little extra fruit a better choice than a Boca Burger. See

http://www.bocaburger.com/products/boca ... oductBox=0

Suggestion: When you stray from the MWL program, indulge in items that are within the regular program! For me, that means (to avoid excessive thinness) that I occasionally enjoy a bowl of noodle soup.

Keep it simple! With time and adherence, you will be very pleased with the results!

Keep us posted on your progress and enjoy your spuds! :-D

Thanks Pinkrose,

You're right. If it's not broken, don't fix it, right? :-D

Any idea how to get the flavoring that they use? That's really what I like the most about them anyway - the "flame-broiled" taste.

I think I'll try adding some smoked paprika to my bean burgers or even my potatoes to get something close to that taste.

Is liquid smoke an acceptable flavoring?

Thanks so much everyone for your awesome insights on these boards. I've been lurking for a couple of weeks and everyone is very helpful. :D

Mary McDougall uses it in some of her recipes, so yes, it's allowed.

And when you feel "cheating" and falling off the MWLP wagon, you can find regular McD plan-legal store-bought burgers on the Approved Foods list:
http://drmcdougall.com/pack_rich_burger.html

Boca Burgers were on that list in the past, but then Dr. McD did more studies on processed soy and decided there was no way he could call them a healthy food and took them off.

MWL legal burgers are easy to make and IMHO taste better than store-bought ones. Just mash rinsed canned black or kidney beans, add an equal amount of cooked brown rice, some dehydrated onion, some Mrs. Dash, some HFCS-free ketchup and enough dry quick oats to hold it all together. Form into patties and grill or bake. Done.

Thanks, Katydid - I've never made them with rice, just oats. I've got some kidney beans in the fridge now, so I know what I'm having for lunch today!

Thank you VeggieSue for the link. I'll have to see if my store carries that brand. I'm glad to see that liquid smoke is okay to use. I came across a recipe for some vegan pepperoni made with wheat gluten one time. It was good and even my omni family liked it. :-D

My husband liked it because it wasn't greasy like regular pepperoni. That recipe was the first time I'd ever heard of smoked paprika, and after trying it I was sold!

also you mentioned the flame grilled taste was what you were after, try grilling mushrooms and other veggies. You would even grill a portabello for a burger. I do shiskabob and really load on the mushrooms.

Thanks Faith - I love grilled veggies - one of my favorite ways to eat them! I swear I think I could eat 2 pounds worth at a time... lol
