About 2 months ago some friends and I watched Dr. McDougall's series called "Advanced Study Weekend" on several topics. I am totally intrigued and want this lifestyle. I've started working towards getting off my medications (with my doctor's help) but he's stated that I will always have to be on some diabetic meds. Also, I am mostly a vegetarian. I say mostly because there are some dishes I've had that I've later found out had eggs or cheese included in them.

Hopefully there is someone who can tell me where I need to start. :-D

Welcome aboard, Dawn! I am glad you found us!

If you want to follow a complicated version of McDougalling--meaning cooking a lot of delicious food--I am not the person who can help you with that but plenty of others here can.

If you want to keep it simple and easy, you can keep in mind what I eat:

Breakfast: steamed greens and brown rice
Lunch: steamed sweet potatoes
Dinner: mixed steamed veggies and brown rice

Sometimes I have a second breakfast of noodles to keep from getting too thin. Also, sometimes I eat steamed potatoes and tomato sauce for lunch.

Actually I enjoy the food but the relative monotony seems to help decrease the interest in eating and this is good for me. :-D You can see my story here:

Use the great educational resources here and keep us posted on your journey, Dawn! :-D

You are already starting well and on your way. This website has a lot of information about starting and adopting a McDougall type diet. I would drift back to the main page and start roaming the various sections starting with the two sections with links called "Free Program" and "McDougall Diet." The free program area will give you an overview of the program and the McDougall diet section will give you recipes to start with if you need them.
Don't worry about discovering hidden animal products or fats and oils in your food as that is something everyone learns to ferret out as they delve into this way of eating.
You will find many people here on the forums at every stage of this journey from long time McDougallers to people like yourself just getting their feet in the water. Feel free to jump in with any questions or comments and you will find people ready and willing to help.
Welcome and good luck on your path to better health. You are not the first here to here the message about being on diabetic meds forever. We have many who have freed themselves from taking those meds and it would not surprise me at all to see you off them too.

Yes, as Jim advised, see

http://www.drmcdougall.com/free.html

Also, in regard to DM, see

http://www.drmcdougall.com/med_hot_diabetes.html

I also would not be surprised if, with time and adherence, you are able to reverse the DM. :-D

Thank you for responding and for all the information. I find this site addicting. You jump to one thread and start reading and the next thing you know you're in another one reading something entirely different yet its all so very relevant to my life.

I am going to do both of your suggestions, pinkrose and Jim. I'll just take my time and try to absorb all that pertains to me. (Which seems like ALL of it  haha)

Thanks again and I'll find a way to post my progress as well.

Sincerely,
Dawn

DawnT it's wonderful if you post your progress but don't feel you have to if that worries you or feels like it's undue pressure. Many of us are confident that March 7th was the day you took your health into your own hands.
Remember, most diabetics die from heart disease so we have something in common. I urge you to try this and challenge us to see if what we are saying is true. Follow this plan closely for a good stretch of time and see for yourself if you are making progress. Work closely with your doctor and have him review what you are doing so he can adjust your meds if needed. Just give this your best and let your body do the work for you.
