I’ve hesitated to write about myself, but I think I’ll join in. In August 2002 – I was involved in a major 7-car pile-up on my way to work (6 lanes). My vehicle was sideswiped by a large truck and knocked into oncoming traffic (going same direction and to my right). In an effort to prevent my car from being overturned, I bared down on the break (outstretching the right leg) just before the second hit. I did not overturn, but ended up on the side of a hill, and onlookers thought I was dead. The car which broadsided me then traveled up the same embankment and completely severed a medium sized tree (just to show the speed). This accident left me with one crushed disc and two damaged discs. My right hip always twisted forward, causing constant pain.

In Sept/2004 I underwent stent implants for a 99% blockage in a large artery and 90% in a second, longer artery, for a total of three stents. I had no heart attack, but did have shortness of breath – even lying down - and inability to walk and run. (I had been a person who engaged in walking and running in my neighborhood). I retired in August 2005. No one informed me that heart disease can return. In late 2008 and early in 2009 I began to feel the shortness of breath again. My health had so deteriorated I actually started to write my own epitaph (I did!). I expected to die before too long. In March 2009, I went on Amazon looking for information. I found the China Study, Eat to Live, How to Reverse Heart Disease by Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr., M.D, and ordered them all; AND then I found Dr. McDougall’s website! And bought three of his books from Amazon. I signed up for Dr. McDougall’s newsletter immediately. (I had never heard of Dr. McDougall)! Then in April 2009 I came down with vertigo that lasted till the end of May, which was the last straw. I either give up or fight. I chose to fight. I love life!

I have high blood pressure and high cholesterol. I had gained some weight. I started eating (not MWL) but the regular plan (with some deviation) in June. In August I had my cholesterol checked. My cholesterol used to be in the high 300s. My LDL – 162; my HDL – 39; Triglycerides – 195. Not yet good, but I’m getting there. I have lost 19 lbs. I have no shortness of breath (after 1 month); more energy; I’m happy; I feel so good! Now for some other good news: On Sept 19, 2009, my leg adjusted, all pain is gone in both legs – after 7 years and 1 month of pain. Took about 2-weeks for some muscles to strengthen, and I am as straight as an arrow, and my feet point forward. (I can even wear high heels again!!!). I can climb stairs again without severe pain. I feel better than I have in a long, long, long time. Thank you Dr. McDougall – and thank all of you faithful posters. Will load a photo as soon as I can figure it out. Zoë

sksamboots - Thank you. I do feel like shouting it out. I still cannot believe the improvement. Now - I'm going to try the strict MWL and see if I can get maximum results. I have been following your journal and you are doing good. I may try the Mary's Mini also.
Sigma957 - Thank you for your encouragement. I will keep posting. I get so much encouragement from all of you very savvy posters.

What a miracle with the leg! You are a strong person to keep fighting. So keep it up. You were lucky enough to find the key.

Thank you for responding. Yes, Faith, I do consider it a miracle. There was no hope offered to me for getting better by the best neurosurgeon in this area. The two offers were (1) surgery with the possibility of being paralyzed for life and/or, at best, about six months of relief, and (2) just a few shots in the spine for pain, which I did try with NO success. I think I chose the best - 1-1/2 years of therapy (which gave a few hours of relief and nothing else), and nothing but my own exercises and stretching. AND NOW, I HAVE REAPED THE BEST REWARD - by following this way of eating. I'm still both thankful and in shock.

HealthE1 - Yes, hearts can sing!!! I'm glad your heart is singing, and I am joining right in with you. I think mine is going to sing for much longer than I hoped. Thank you for responding. It makes me feel good.

That is awesome! So glad to hear how much better things are for you. Now throw out that epitaph and write another one when you are 100 or so. :D

Fulenn - a wonderful suggestion. Thank you, I will put that epitaph off for a long time. My heart - instead of pounding me - is beating so-o smooth!
Birdy - You are so thoughtful. Thank you. Yes, I am enjoying life much better. I even sing to myself lately, and, occasionally, break into a few dance steps, or just "boogie down" for a minute or two. Yesterday, I found this music on my computer while I was browsing - "Staying Alive" by the Bee Gees. I thought it was very appropriate for me. :D

Both of you, have a wonderful day.

Thank you! And I believe it. A very "expert" observation.

I just bought and read the nathan pritikin books (through a charity book shop which was cheap) AND I THINKS HIS IDEAS ARE FANTASTIC and great.I like the idea that he totllay reversed his heart disease through changing his diet.He was a cardiac cripple who couldn't walk or jog even a short distance. He reversed this through diet changes. He lowewred his fat and cholesterol.I read this in the Pritikin promise book and his biography. I now believe that health problems and how long you are going to live depends on what foods you eat.
