Hey, Merri, it was Heart Disease for Dummies, after all!

I used to be one of those who thought and taught that diet didn't have that big of an impact. But you know, you were supposed to eat "well". Sigh. Now, to see pictures of arteries swept clean of plaque, it just amazes and thrills me. This is something everyone in my family has, and I have a way out!

If I knew then what I know now. :?

As far as spices go, can't beat Benson's Table Tasty...use it on just about everything. [/quote]

I concur. I just had some on some steamed cabbage tonight and I dont' even like cabbage! Debbie Benson will send you a free sample for the cost of postage. The website is www.BensonsGourmetSeasonings.com. I love all of the other flavors too, especially on roasted potatoes!

Love & Kale,
Chef AJ

I tried the Table Tasty... and two free samples that were sent with it. I still have some. I found that... yes... it does taste good, but I was adding it with earth balance to potatoes and then found myself still adding a bit of salt because it really didn't give me that salt fix. At $10.00 for a small bottle... with shipping and all... I figured that I better cut that habit right now. But the flavor... yum! :)

I buy the sets and with the free shipping I pay less than $4 per bottle. I have all of the flavors. Since I don't use salt or even like it, I just use the seasonings for their flavor, not as a salt substitute. If you want something that really tastes salt, try sea veggies like kelp, dulse, nori or kombu.

I buy the pound package and fill my own shaker with it. Lasts so much longer. My only concern is the ingredient: silicon dioxide--which we are not to consume too much of per day. When I get going on that Table Tasty, I can use way too much in a day, some days.

Plus, a t. or so is a few grams of protein--and those who must watch protein, can get more protein in the day, than desired.

What kicks up taste in salt substitutes is the lemon, the nutritional yeast, tomato powder, and silicon dioxide. Knowing that, there ought to be a way to put together a seasoning blend that doesn't cut into the budget so much.

And HI to you Chef AJ!!!!

It has protein?? I looked at the label and saw "0" for protein and didn't even consider that the serving size is 1/4 tsp and that more of a serving would have protein. Yikes! I was using it like crazy... and I am limited on my protein. I was watching it because of potassium and I have to limit that as well, but I didn't even consider the protein part. Thanks for the tip!

I have made my own seasoing for years simply by taking sun dried tomatoes (the oil and salt free kind) and turning them into a powder in my blendtec.

Table Tasty ROCKS!! I just ordered a pound of it after trying it out in the small size and just loving it. It's great on almost everything, including popcorn.

I very much doubt that using it adds more than a very negligible amount of protein. Go easy on it, but enjoy it! It adds a lot of flavor!

Nutritional yeast is ingredient #1 and that means it's the largest percentage. A T. of nutritional yeast is 8 grams protein.

Maybe my thinking's off, but I'm thinking it's got to count as a higher protein--especially if one uses it several times a day, and shakes that shaker over and over.
