You're right. I'm off all diet sodas now; I just drink purified water. But I can remember a few years back swearing off Diet Pepsi, which I loved. When I tried one again, thinking it would taste good, it BURNED ALL THE WAY DOWN my esophagus! Ugh! All I have to do is remember that burning sensation, and my desire for "just one" goes away.
Thanks, all for the encouragement.

Nettie, thank you for sharing and for the encouragement you give to others. I'm right there with you......a breast cancer survivor too (7 1/2 years....YEAH!), gained weight from all the treatment, am in my 50's also now, and have a ton to loose. And I'm also doing regular McD.

Here's to our future health

Well, folks, several of you have asked about my progress. I had the wind taken out of my sails a few weeks back, so I've been depressed and have not posted lately. But here's what happened:
I went to the doctor, so excited for him to see my progress, but a big surprise awaited me. My cholesterol was exactly the same as 5 months before: 198. I couldn't believe it hadn't gone down! And my other blood cholesterol readings were about the same also. I wondered what could be wrong. Well, my doctor was very grave when he told me my thyroid readings were way, way too high. I've been on Synthroid for over 20 years, and a couple of years ago they said I needed to reduce my dosage a little. (Has my thyroid gland decided to kick in after all these years of not working? No doctor has been able to answer this.) Anyway, he wants me to again lower my Synthroid drastically, which I knew would slow down or maybe even halt my weight loss. Sure enough, after taking the lower dose for only 2 days out of one week, I GAINED 4 pounds overnight! It took me 2 weeks to lose that 4 pounds again. I'm easing into the lower dosage gradually because I get so tired if I do it all at once. Anyway, the Physician's Assistant said that my high thyroid levels were probably keeping my blood pressure and cholesterol readings high. I'm not sure if she's correct, but there has to be something keeping my cholesterol so high after all these months on McDougall. Believe me, I'm VERY faithful to McDougall. I don't cheat at all. (I've listed my diet in an earlier post.)
But, I seem to still be losing weight - I'm down to 208 from 282. And I eat all the time, and I mean, ALL THE TIME. (I start eating my "lunchtime" salad around 10 a.m.) So, that's my story. I'll be rechecked again in a few months, and I hope to have better readings next time.

Hi, Nettie. Sorry things haven't been going as well for you, but a 74 pound weight loss is nothing to sneeze at. You go girl! :D When you say your throid was too high, do you mean that your TSH was too low? You shouldn't feel awful if you are on the correct dose. Did they cut you down too much all at once?

Just to give you a little encouragement, here is a link to a recent thread about high lipids:

As you lose the extra weight I am sure your lipids will improve with time. Keep up the good work and keep coming back to inspire us. You give us "young 'uns" no excuse to rest on our laurels! :D

Yes, my TSH was .008 but 6 months ago was .04 And, since it is supposed to be over 1.0 I'm obviously going in the wrong direction. Starting this weekend I'm going to take the lower dosage daily. I'm hopeful that it won't derail my weight loss too much. And you're right - a 74-pound weight loss in 6-1/2 months is great! All glory to God!

Bummer. Yup, you definitely need a lower dose. Don't want to thin your bones out from too much of that stuff. Hang in there though. You're still my inspiration when I'm getting a weight loss of 0.25 pounds in a week!

Thanks so much for the encouragement. I'm so afraid of gaining weight, but if my body says I'm supposed to be on a lower dose of thyroid meds, then I probably won't gain. MY SCALE shows weight loss in 1-pound increments, so I can't see 1/4-pound weight losses. (It's an old scale, but accurate.)
It occurred to me that I need to stop focusing on weight loss and consider the health benefits of the McDougall program. If I eat right, everything else will take care of itself. At my age and marital status, I'm not interested in attracting attention from the opposite sex; I just want to live long enough to stay with the wonderful man I've already got!

Now, if I could just get him to get on the program with me....
