OK. We know that our weight can fluctuate within a 24-hour period and that these fluctuations are mostly due to digestive track content, bladder content, how hydrated or dehydrated we are, how much stored glycogen we have in our bodies, etc. -- and very little to do with how much actual body fat we have gained or lost in just 1 day.

So, HOW full (or empty) of food and liquid are we SUPPOSED to be when calculating our Body Mass Index (BMI) numbers? I calculate mine when I am at my "emptiest" BUT is this CHEATING? The charts do not supply enough info with them on HOW TO WEIGH when calculating BMI!

Thanks!

Okay, I'm going to betray how obsessive-compulsive I am now, but I weigh myself each morning naked after voiding, whether I have had a BM or not. Then I look at the trend, rather than any specific day, to know what my BMI is. That is the only way that has worked for me to not panic when I get on the scale and my weight is up 4 pounds. I know logically there is no possible way that could happen from gaining fat, but if I hadn't weighed myself for a week, there is no way it wouldn't discourage me.

My best friend's mother (a nurse of decades) once weighed me in the morning, after sitting around a while, using the bathroom, etc. but she was upset that the number wouldn't be quite right because I had eaten an apple by then and couldn't really take off my p-js for her.

You want to be as empty as possible. Your BMI doesn't include all the extra stuff inside of you (water, apples), just your body's actual composition. So . . . keep doing what you're doing!

Roxanne, THANK YOU!

I have been wondering about this for a long time!

I even asked about this on the old McD board, but no one knew the answer.

Is what you posted about being "as empty as possible" written out anywhere WITH a BMI chart and/or BMI calculator on any reputable sites?

If it is not, it SHOULD BE!

Thanks, again!

First, I wouldn't read too much into BMI as it is not necessary indicative of how healthy a person is, although for the general population it does give an indication. (It is very broad, I'm 6' and for a normal BMI I can be between 135-185lbs.??)

I think with as little clothes as possible at the same time every week is good. But my company provides annual voluntary health screens and weight is taken fully clothed, kind of a rip!

Getting an accurate BMI via weight and height is not really accurate.
The only accurate measurement is having yourself weighed in water, after expelling all the air out of your lungs.
Not something for the fainthearted (like me), nor all that cheap of a procedure.
That said --
when using the weight and height charts to determine your approximate BMI, weigh yourself at the same time of the day. That would be your most consistant measurement. Either first thing in the morning, or the last thing at night. Naked is easier than doning the same clothes every day just to weigh yourself.
Personally, first thing in the morning before I jump into the shower works the best for me. Then I AVERAGE the month's weighings and use that as my "official weight". That incorporates all the flushings and the water; and it's more accurate.
