Calorie Density Question - Squash

Postby jessicajane11 » Tue Apr 08, 2014 4:54 pm

Hello!
I've been trying to follow the MWL program as closely as possible (I was losing weight before but eating pasta was definitely slowing me down!) but I had a question about caloric density. I try to eat a hearty salad or steamed veggies before I eat my starches to follow the more yellow and green veggies recommendation, and I LOVE spaghetti squash as a replacement for pasta. I just wasn't sure if winter squash count as a starch or a yellow vegetable. Is that type of squash particularly nutrient dense?

Thanks all!
Jessica

Winter squashes, including spaghetti squash, count as starches, as far as McDougalling goes. Summer squash, like yellow and zucchini, are counted as vegetables.

Can always look here to find calorie density of specific food

https://cronometer.com/

They do count as starch BUT winter squash a lot less calorie dense than potatoes--

White potatoes about 427 cal/pound

Butternut squash about 182 cal/pound

Spaghetti squash, the winnah and still the champeeeeeen at 141 cal/pound

Summer squash about 1/ that averaging 77 cal/pound
