Hi all,

I've managed to misplace my copy of the MWL book and have a quick question: is unsweetened almond milk permitted as part of MWLP? This is as part of a recipe, not for drinking or over cereal, in case that makes a difference.

TIA!

EDITED to say I just found my book (!) and it looks like the answer is NO. According to page 190, acceptable milk substitutes include Amazake Rice Drink and Fat Free Soy Moo. Thanks anyway!

I dont think that they even sold Almond Milk when that book was written. A lot of the products listed in the book you can't find anymore.

But it is what I use, I dont use a lot of it, I had stopped using it as I have given up sugar & could not find the unsweetened kind, but now they are carrying it at Winco, so I have gone back to using it, about 1/4 c. on my oatmeal, which I have about 4-5 days a week. I never use it as a beverage.

Like Jan said Almond milk wasn't around then but I'd guess since nuts aren't on it that almond milk wouldn't be either.

Thanks, Jan & Rosey. I also wondered if perhaps the product wasn't around when the book was written. Too bad there isn't an updated list somewhere! The almond milk I found is unsweetened and only 35 calories per cup, but 2.5 grams of fat. The recipe I want to use calls for 1 cup total, but since the recipe is to be shared with other McDougallers, I want to be certain it is 100% MWL compliant, so while I might use almond milk occasionally for a recipe at home, I won't use it in this case. Thanks again for your help!

Soy isnt allowed either, but FF soy milk is.

What I do is this, I buy regular plain unsweetened almond milk, 1/2 gallon. I pour that into a 1 gallon pitcher and add about a 1/4 gallon of water. When a recipe calls for one of the milks, I split the amount in half.

So say the recipe calls for 2 cups of milk alternative, I use 1 cup the already diluted almond milk and then 1 cup of water.

I stopped buying the ff milks because I figured out all they were doing was adding water, well I dont want to pay for water when I can do it myself.

You could ask the other McDougallers if using diluted almond milk is an issue too. They might not mind for one meal with it being diluted down.

Well, the Almond Milk I am using is unsweetened, it has 40 Calories per cup & 3.5 grams of fat. A cup of raw Almonds is about 825 Calories. So I doubt that there is that there are that many Almonds in the milk, it is obviously diluted quite a bit. So I would not really think it is an issue. I drank the sweetened one before, since it was all I could find & I lost weight just fine. This year I stopped using it because I got rid of the last bit of sugar in my diet. When I found the unsweetened Almond Milk in Winco last month, I went back to using it on my oatmeal. But yes, it would be good if you did use it, to let people know, but I can't imagine, even 1 Cup, in a recipe for at least 4, would be an issue for just yourself. I dont like soy milk or rice milk, they just dont taste good to me. But maybe they would be a replacement for Almond Milk in that recipe.

So it is something that I am willing to allow on my MWL. As long as I continue to lose weight that's good enough for me. At best I use 1/4 c., that is 10 calories & less than 1 gram of fat. I am sure there are worse things that could be added to one's diet than a dobble of Almond Milk.
