I'm sorry to admit that I have asked this questions before but for some reason, I have had trouble remembering and I don't know where in his books he goes in to it. I know I have read it and I know it has come up here now and then but my brain keeps dropping the ball. I think I read it in MWL but have struggled with finding it. I am thinking it is 1/2 cup but I think what is confusing me is that Dr. Fuhrman says at least 1 cup a day and I'm getting my wires crossed. I can't really afford beano all the time and my body just doesn't seem to get past needing it when I eat them. My mother has always told me that my body would adjust but I'm thinking at this point, probably not.
I love them and eat more than 1/2 cup when I have them but if Dr. Mcdougall did indeed say 1/2 cup, I am going to cut back. By the way, I do lots better with lentils than I do any of the others. Garbanzo beans are a little better too I think.
Thanks

Dr. McD's recommendation is limiting it to 1 cup a day.

Enjoy :-D

Limiting to half a cup is recommended if you have kidney issues or osteoporosis otherwise it's 1 cup as Donna suggested. But it's 1 cup a day on average so if you have no beans one day you can have 2 cups the next day.

Well, If I ever decide to eat 2 cups in one day, I better be on a deserted island with no immediate chance of rescue.

Hi Evangelin,

I also remember reading on the boards recently that the average intake should be 1 cup per day i.e its ok if it evens out that way. You could eat more on some days and not eat them at all on another day, depending on what you are making.

This makes more sense to me, since it is realistic, depending on what recipe we end up making on a certain day.

thanks..

I have a question for you all. Do you cook your own beans or use canned beans? If you do use canned beans do you get the ones without salt? I love beans almost as much as potatoes! :D

I love beans too. I prefer to cook my own. I freeze them when I make a big pot.

However, that's not always possible so when I do get canned beans I get the no salt kind.

Welcome to the board!

I love beans, too, but they are not necessary in this way of eating at all. I avoid them most days, since they have so much protein, and also because many varieties give me stomach distress (as opposed to gas, which I apparently get from just about anything, every few days! :o ).

I can only eat refried pinto beans, black beans and garbanzos. I've tried my beloved lentils 3 times in the past 2 years, and I've had the worst stomach pain each time. Other no-nos include navy, great northern, and kidney.

And since I have to limit them so much, I gave up on cooking my own and I buy them canned. The ones I make myself and freeze--they take 2 -3 days in the fridge to thaw, and by that time I've forgotten about them and they spoil! I try to buy the salt-free as much as I can. I get them by mail-order from VitaCost--it is a lot cheaper than the stores here, even with the shipping.

I usually cook my own beans...they are so inexpensive...but I am going to start doing them both so I won't be tempted to go off this way of eating. :o

I eat lots of beans. Almost always canned, no-salt-added (Eden Foods) b/c I'm super busy and have no time for cooking beans. My faves are garbanzos, but I also love black beans, kidney beans, etc. Lentils are also awesome--since they are faster cooking I sometimes make them myself. Trader Joe's also sells pre-cooked lentils in the produce area (nothing added--just cooked lentils), which are a great time saver. :)

I have mostly switched to cooking dry beans rather than using canned. It's cheaper, there's no salt, and if I use my slow cooker, it doesn't feel like it takes up a lot of my time. It does require more planning than using canned, but I'm okay with that.
