I shopped at the salvage grocery store today and picked up two boxes of couscous for 59 cents apiece -- thought it looked like a bargain but I've never bought it before so I don't know! When I got it home I looked at the ingredients to make sure there were no additives, and it says semolina for ingredients -- is that a whole grain, and MWL legal?

My understanding is that couscous is simply a small round pasta. Some people in some programs put it in the grain category but it is really a pasta. I'm not following MWL so not up on all its rules but I don't think is allows pasta.

Well I have my own copy of MWL now, and looked up couscous. There is one mention of it in a soup that Dr. M says is OK in the packaged food section, and there is also a recipe for couscous with fruit for a breakfast food.
I also found where Dr. M says to avoid white pasta on MWL, so maybe couscous is a whole grain pasta. Anyway, I'll probably just use it for a potluck meal so I only eat one serving of it.

A long time ago, soon after the MWLP book came out, Dr. McD had replied to this question either in an email to someone who asked or to the old McD board on VegSource, that its inclusion in the book was an editing mistake, that it is indeed a pasta and not a whole grain. Sorry, but I never saved the url of that board post and the Search over on VegSource never really worked right. You can always write directly to him and ask, too: drmcdougall@drmcdougall.com

Thanks Veggie Sue. I'll not bother him with him since it's not something I ordinarily buy. I'll just take it to a potluck and let others enjoy it. :)
