I just use Rice Dream for the rice milk. It is low enough in fat. I prefer almond milk for drinking, but it will have to wait until I am back down to my goal :-D

As far as flavoring the food, I use Bragg's, apple cider and balsamic vinegars, salsa (lots), garlic, and BBQ sauce on almost everything. I like the taste of the veggies plain or just with salt and pepper to taste, but potatoes and rice need some jazzing up.

BW,
Is the Rice Dream MWL approved? And do you just use any brand of BBQ sauce. I think I need to re-read the McD book. I had read it at the beginning of the year for health info, with no intention of doing the program.

But now I'm confused with various recipes offered. Some have maple syrup, whole wheat, and I'm just not sure what is "legal."

I would love to put some bbq sauce on my food, but though it wasn't allowed. As of now I have been putting on the Braggs Liquid Aminos, but I'm not sure how much is allowed, since it has sodium.

Thanks,
Kelly

Kelly,
the peanut sauce is a condiment and should be used sparingly, too. They served it at the 10-day program, but I know it's not recommended on the MWL plan (but allowed on the regular plan - when you are much closer to goal). BTW, it's also yummy on baked sweet potatoes.

Bragg's has as much sodium as soy sauce, so use it sparingly - like other condiments - especially if you are salt sensitive.

There's also a recipe somewhere for curried lentil soup that is quite good. I'll have to find it's origin and let you know where to look.

Oh, I forgot: Rice Milk and Almond Milk were served at the 10-day program. I don't think it really matters which non-dairy milk you use (there are several more available, like oat and hemp, etc.), because you're just putting it on cereal- probably less than 1/4 cup daily - at least, that's what most of us do.

Siracha sauce--it is orange red with a chicken/rooster on the lable. It is available in the Asian markets or even reg. mks on Asian aisle.
Use sparingly, but it really brightens veggie soup. I use just a tsp or less for a whole big batch of soup, but my dh really likes it.
You can take basalmic vinegar and "reduce" it. Just put in a pan a boil down. It makes a thicker sauce to drizzle over things.
I found when I first started to cut back on the salt, that the more vinegar I used, and Lemon Juice really helped. I also get fresh limes now.
I put lemon juice in my water when I cook my artichokes. Then I just eat them. Mind you I was raised on butter on each leaf of an artichoke. Yuck.

"Ok - so you can't find a FF rice milk either. I wonder what :milk" people drink on the maintenance level? "

I buy Rice Dream original. I tried the low cal version at Whole Foods, but couldn't abide that on my cereal, so I went back to the Rice Dream. It's not fat free, but I can eat my gluten-free cereal in the morning, and I don't drink it as a milk substitute. I still have weight to lose, but slow is ok with me, I can't afford to buy new clothes for work every month anyway!

Gavi. What I use on my cereal is a mix of 1/2 vanilla almond milk and 1/2 water. It is still rich on my oatmeal. I was using rice milk ,but like the almond better.
On clothes while losing have you considered a consignment shop,I have picked up some nice things at a couple of them. Some are still new with tags still on.
Hope this helps.

If BBQ sauce would help, then just read labels - there is some out there. It's a condiment so you can have a bit on potatoes or something.

I use the asian hot sauce a lot with veggies and rice, and ponzu or light soy sauce. The hot sauce really helps.

I also cook a lot with tomatoes. I use a lot of herb blends too and just have fun sniffing and sprinkling.

If you have been dependent on prepared foods then it'll take a bit to get use to making your own and liking it. I still am not wild about my Indian cooking but I love my asian better than the restaurants.

Veggielou,

Actually, I do hit the local consignment shop, it's called Goodwill. I don't have a lot of choice where I live unfortunately, sigh.... But, I found Almond milk to be too sweet. My sister likes the almond flavored Rice Dream, and even that is too sweet for me. The other one tastes like skim milk to me. When I do oatmeal, it's plain. I guess I just don't like sweet cereal. Unless it's from fruit of course! :-D

for cereal try juice. You aren't drinking the milk are you? I rarely use any milk. I only use it for making corn bread and creamed soups like potato or butternut squash. I get plain soy for that and use one cup per pot of soup.

I found a great recipe for doing rice milk at home! I won't buy Rice Dream for a few reasons but if you go to
http://www.veganreader.com/2009/05/17/h ... ice-dream/

It gives you step by step instructions and nutritional values. I was going to wait till the weekend to make some but I ended up making it this afternoon and I LOVED it!!! It gives you options for taste and it was VERY easy!

I second the recipe for rice milk above! I tried it and it's the best homemade rice milk I have ever tried. I'm going to try turning some into fat free "ice cream" for my lactose intolerant son too.

Ryza makes an oil-free rice milk, and it's very good. http://www.ryza.ca/us/products.php I buy mine at Rainbow Market. I don't drink it, but I do use it on cereal, and in cooking. The taste is similar to skim milk. At least I think so--it's been a long time since I tasted real milk.

If you can't find Ryza, then try oat milk. http://www.pacificfoods.com/our-foods/nut-grain-beverages/organic-oat-original-non-dairy-beverage. It's easier to find, oil-free, and the taste is closer to whole milk.

I was googling FF rice milk when I found this post. Read the McDougall book and have been following it but not to the letter. I lost 20 lbs. just by giving up meat and cheese, but now I'm cooking with out oil and trying to find FF rice milk for my cereal, but I guess I'll be giving up my cereal because it is not whole grain. I've been amazed that I actually am losing weight while eating as much as I want. Several years ago I starved myself to lose 40 lbs, I was hungry all the time and I was getting a lot of "healthy" fat and although I was vegetarian I was getting 25% of my calories from protein lots of soy. When I finally caved to my hunger I gained back all the weight in just a few months. Being able to eat as much as I want and still lose weight is great!
