I usually buy them loose, too.

Here in my rural Maine grocery store (per pound):

Red - $.69
Russet - $.79
Yellow - $.99
Gourmet Baby Purple - $2.69

I just bought 2 10-pound bags of Russets for $.98 each at Winco here in Utah. The 5 pound bag was the same price (not on sale). I prefer the Yukon gold but for ~10 cents a pound I can definitely deal with lots of Russets!

Hay thanks for all the prices...Many things are cheap here in Thailand (Thai food for one:)) but potatos seem to last in the middle price wise...Did plant my own last week...see how that goes...

Still, eating potatoes is a nice way to eat and easy on the pocket book.....

Really good thread Don. It's interesting to see prices world wide from our members.I can't buy russets where I am in Mexico....only whites that resemble Yukon Golds but are not labelled as such. At the market I can buy a kilo bag of small one for 10 pesos less then $1 Us
A friend posted this link to the varieties of potatoes that her son grew and had available in Peru... such beautiful colors and shapes!
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Potato-Pa ... 1567437228 I don't know how to link this but I guess you could just copy and paste.
If any one knows how to put the photo here go ahead. Thanks Dlee

I live near Austin and shop at HEB, too. We have the same high prices! Hey, we're getting ripped off down here is Texas! I know everything is bigger down here, but prices, too?

Hi I live in Pa, i think I am paying around $5.00 for a 5 pound bag of baking potatoes. i do think the loose ones are better quality. I thought i read recently that potatoes are now on the list that you should buy organically. They were too expensive for me. For now i will stick with the regulars.

Does anybody here raise potatoes? If you do, how do they compare to the spuds you buy in stores? :?:

I shopped at the farmers market in downtown Vancouver, Washington this morning. Loose, farm fresh potatoes ranged from $1 to $3 per pound. I splurged at got some fingerlings to roast, $3 per pound.

FWIW, it is my understanding that potatoes exposed to light have a tendency to green up. Goodness knows, most produce departments are rather brightly lighted. They should also not be stored in plastic bags. For both reasons, I generally buy loose, and whenever possible I am willing to pay the higher price at the farmers market.

Pinkrose, I grew them once. I also regularly had some volunteers in the compost heap. Freshly harvested potatoes are crunchy as can be, yum. That's another reason why I like to get them from the farmers.

I never did it but have thought about it since I had a kid's gardening book that showed how to do it in a small plastic tub. I found the below. Sounds like fun!

Pinkrose,
I grew them a couple of times. Once on the farm when Daddy had tilled the earth deap and regularly and they were great. Once in 50 gallon plastic tubs. (1 cut in half with hole drilled in the bottom) I used half garden soil half organic mulch. They grew like crazy in the lite nutrient rich soil and where so easy to harvest. When the plants go weak and brownish you just tip the tub over on the side and stomp on it a bit. then dig in with your hands or plastic scoop, so as not to damage the spuds. They were beatiful and taste great. My daughter who was 12 at the time really enjoyed the project. She was in charge of caring for them and loved how they grew so fast and lush.
Tip: do not plant near tomatoes!!!!! They share pests and deseases. No closer than 20 feet.

In the UK i pay about 90p for 2.5 kilos in Tesco. And thata the cheapest ive see, including markets. For even sizes and organic its at least double.

I grow my own potatoes. This year I planted 5# Yukon Gold, 5# Reds, 5# Kennebec (Russets). There is no comparison to the taste and texture of eating fresh garden potatoes. I leave them in the ground until early November (in Pennsylvania) and I dig 5-10# at a time as I need them. I have been eating them for about a month now. I need to make a root cellar so that I can store them over the winter. I also have a dozen sweet potato vines that I will start harvesting soon. I do love my potatoes!
