I think Dr Esselstyn based his diet on Dr. McDougall's. It is pretty much identical to his MWLD. His book "how to prevent heart disease" has some great recipes. I have heard him and his wife speak and she gives great advice on how to eat this way without alot of fancy recipes. I especially loved her advice on how to get more greens in your diet by throwing spinach in the rice cooker about halfway into to cooking. You can't taste it and you get all those extra nutrients.

Esselstyn. I have not been lucky enough to hear Dr. McDougall speak yet. I am hoping to go to the health expo in LA, Ca in October and hear him. I have found that even after reading their books and following the diet you always learn something you didn't know and it is so inspiring.

I consider those 3 essentially interchangeable. They are the Troika of Goodness as far as I'm concerned! :)

Now, I'm juicing and want to still make sure I get healthier....

I just don't want to find myself following something and still no changes in my body. I'm not trying to lose 100 pounds, just 20 and I'll be happy. I get jelouse that people go on these changes and so much happens. Is it because I don't have so many changes that need to be made I'm not seeing anything? I don't have any great energy.

You probably are not having great results and energy because of the juicing. Juices are very high in calories and have absolutely no fiber to "fill you up." One of the many things that Esselstyn, McDougall, and Campbell all agree on is that juicing is NOT a good way to get your calories. Eat the whole food.

I would highly recommend getting Esselstyn's book, Prevent and Reverw Heart Disease. The chapter on oil is worth the price of the book alone.

But my favorite thing about the book is the recipes. I have only found a few McD recipes that I really like - most seem too bland, or take too long to make - but my whole family loves many of the Esselstyn recipes. It's hard to believe they don't contain any salt (a few contain some soy sauce).

While I understand Dr. McDougall's position on juicing, I disagree that it is the reason for less than great energy. Many people have great results on a juice fast because it is actually a vegan diet and they are off all the fat, animal products, refined sugar, and usually caffeine, too.

Vegetable juices are not super high in calories and I know the juice program Tytbody was following recommended 80% vegetable to 20% fruit to keep the sugars low. This is from the "Fat, Sick, & Nearly Dead" movie.

Many people have found juicing is an effective way to transition to a permanent plant-based way of eating, when they would never have dreamed of being satisfied without animal products otherwise. The juicing forum associated with that movie is filled with people discovering Esselstyn, Barnard, McDougall, and Campbell, as well as Fuhrman (since he was featured in the movie). If that's what it takes to get them here, please accept that it was the appropriate path for them.

I do believe that juicing does work especially when you add in the veggies. it can and does fill you up because you are drinking quite a few and they are healthy. Juice does not mean all fruits. Most are green with some fruity ones mixed in to be able to pallet them.

I'm now going to order this other book, I know books books but I like to read and get solid on what i'm doing.

it's called the Happy Herbivore and it has a... what do you call it when Jane and Rip Esslestyn say something on the back and also Dr. Bernard said something good about it. and John and Mary McDougall.

That must mean that book is following their principles would you not think so?

In an interview Esselstyn explained that he was strongly influenced by McDougall. In practice, McD emphasizes starches for satiety and Ess emphasizes leafy green vegetables to restore endothelial function in his patients as rapidly as possible. To know what Campbell eats, I think you'd have to ask his wife! The Happy Herbivore recipes are generally on-plan, she does not use oil, but does have some richer ingredients. All that I have tried have been great. As for juicing, the fiber is lost, which while without calories, is a very important nutrient.
