We've been taking a tbsp of flax seed with our oatmeal for it's high ratio of Omega-3 to Omega-6. Others take fish oil for the same reason. This study seems to bring into question the benefits of fish oil:

Now I'm wondering if Dr McDougall recommends the taking of flax seed.

Ground flaxseeds are a good source of fiber, raises good omega 3s and the lignins in the shells help reduce the risk of hormonal stimulated cancers. But they aren't necessary or required.

I use the CRONometer to track my food from time to time. The change in my omega 6 to omega 3 ratio is helped by the addition of a single tablespoon of ground flaxseed in my morning grain. I consider it a safety margin.

Thanks. One interesting thing about the more recent studies showing no benefit from fish oil, is that the subjects were taking cholesterol lowering drugs which may have been the reason that no benefit resulted from the fish oil. It just seems to emphasize the weakness of many studies ie, it's almost impossible with human subject to conduct a well controlled test. This reminds me of the fact that virtually no studies are ever conducted on subject with our WOE and, therefore, any results are suspect at best. This IMHO is because we're already accruing many benefits from this WOE and the incremental benefit of some additional, highly touted vitamin, food, supplement, etc is probably marginal at best.
