"Oh, that looks and tastes delicious, but too many carbs for me." I am going to flip out. I have had 3 people just today say to me "Oh, that looks delicious and yes, I would love a taste -- oooh, that is so good, too bad it has so many carbs for me to eat" and "oh, that is delicious, but you say it has no fat? I can't eat that many carbs -- carbs is what made me fat, I don't have to worry about the fat I eat because eating fat doesn't make you fat" Seriously??? Keep in mind, these foods were things like peas, onions, tomatoes and beans .. I am quite sure lots of people have gotten fat from eating to many peas... NOT.

Okay, I feel better.

Well, you know these are the same people who have been so supportive of my weight loss and health improvements - but, they just can't see through the fog. I am just happy I am seeing more clearly through that fog these days!

My co-worker asked me how I lost so much weight and I was explaining this WOE. She was all excited because she's doing that Spark diet, which includes all kinds of supplements that you have to buy. She explained that she can eat carbs but has to limit them. I said something along the lines of, "Really? I eat huge plates of brown rice and potatoes all the time." So people can look at someone that's thin and in great shape, but then not believe that the things they eat have anything to do with it? :?

I have yet to experience that yet Sharon. I just get the stares and crazy questions from people when they find out what I choose not to eat. Then I tell them I lost 40+ pounds on potatoes, rice and veggies and they don't understand how.

Yep, same here. Mentioned to a co-worker the other day that a typical lunch for me might be 3 or 4 Wendy's baked potatoes. TOO many CARBS!!! was the reply. Calories make you FAT!!! OMG! Run for the hills!

My reply was, you have known me since my 290lb+ days. Does it appear to you that carbs or calories are making me fatter or skinnier??(I am 230 now) But,but,but,but... too many calories no matter from what source make you gain weight!! I smiled and said you are right and walked off. :\

Yesterday, I was sitting in a coworker's office and another coworker came in and offered us some Russian individually wrapped wafer cookies and whatnot. The one I was sitting with said, "No, thanks, they're probably too carby for me." I said, "Yeah, and they're probably not carby enough for me." :unibrow:

I love on one Dr. McDougall's electures he shares about learning to turn when windsurfing... must have been a lot colder vs. here in the islands. He shared the learning curve as being very steep. It took me forever to understand there is a difference between processed and unprocessed carbs. And all plants have oil. I was able to get right away that all foods contain protein. In AA you learn alcoholism is not only a physical disease but a thinking disease.

My cousin was here from CA, for my son's wedding and one of the first questions was, "Where do you get your protein?" I just repeated someone on the board, where they said, "The same place the cows get theirs." Then a couple of days later, I overate.. brown rice, quinoa, salad and when I had rested after eating, she said, "Carbs make you tired." It is amazing how deep all that subconscious programing is and when it becomes conscious it we no longer enslaved to it. Today I am grateful to be able to think it through.

It is not easy to live off the SAD grid, because we network through food. When I go to slippery places I have to make sure I have 'food' that will take care of my emotional needs. It is a body, mind and social disease, that tells the person they don't have a disease. Cunning and baffling like alcohol. I am able to bring in nuts, and soy milk and then tweak back to being grateful of being starch centered as the goal is age disease free to the best of our body's ability.

Aloha, patty

Now that many in my office know of my plant strong lifestyle, I do hear, "oh, he won't eat that." Usually they are right, because they are sharing foot that I don't recognize as healthy.

@dstewart: Love the response!

When I hear things like that it gives me an excuse to say "I lost 83 pounds eating nothing but carbs!" I know that there is protein and a bit of fat in the carbs we eat but I love putting it so bluntly and seeing the reactions I get.

Total calories do count, so show them a photo of a nice sized baked potato, a tablespoon of olive oil, and 3 ounces of steak (about the size of a deck of cards). All 3 have about the same number of calories (give or take 10).

Then say "If you were hungry and this was all you were going to get to eat today, which would YOU choose?"
