I saw your challenge. :)

But I found this today and I though I should post it here as I find it interesting and similar to McDougall. :)

I recall a previous thread on this same topic, the discuss did guide me to Kate's thread. While I have not attempted the $3/day plan (yet) I would like to see if I could accomplish this with my family. I did write about this topic on my site.

Since changing the way I eat, I have experienced a substantial drop in the amount of money I spend on food. I do find myself walking out of stores with an armful of veggies for a very good price, sometimes it surprises me at just how much I bought and I still have cash in my pocket!

Now that I have followed this way of eating for 8 months or so, I could realistically take on this challenge. It would take some advanced planning on my part to create a few menus to follow for a trial period, say 30 days.

You can eat quite well here for less than $3/day if you like coarse rice, potatoes and fresh veggies! :D

Mahalo for posting Kate's thread and Kate for posting your menu's. A wonderful HOW and WHY thread to share.

And stoumi I totally agree that it takes up front money. I am totally grateful for all the equipment I have purchased for myself and my family in figuring it out. And at least those are a one time (hopefully) expense. In the past I purchased a tortilla press and today I am going to try to make your corn tortillas, so I can make corn chips for my grandchildren. We all love the recipe for the Whole Wheat Oat Bread with Honey, only using ground brown rice as everyone is now aware of the possibility gluten can be problematic. You are the best!

Aloha, patty

yikes... I see making the corn tortillas is going to take some practice. I made the mistake of purchasing corn meal.. though I can grind it into a flour. The fun of the steep learning curve:)

I don't know what I'd do w/o a Trader Joes near me. I used to fritter my $ away at Whole Foods, now I rarely buy anything there (went from a daily WF shopper to a monthly). The worst part about Whole Foods is that they charge more for produce grown in California IN California than they do for produce grown in California IN Florida stores... not to mention the rest of the country. I know they are just running a business, but their prices have now just become insulting to me and we shop elsewhere.

Whole Paycheck produce is indeed a ripoff most of the time. I buy produce from farmers markets as much as possible. Luckily here in San Francisco I have several year-round markets to choose from!
