Well we tried our first meal using Jeff Novicks new Fast Food DVD Burgers and Fries. Here is our experience...
The DVD was an easy and entertaining watch. It features Jeff with the two daughters of Jeff and Sabrina Nelson from Vegsource. As we learned from the DVD they have been vegan their whole lives and seem to be quite healthy and vibrant at 18 years of age.
In the DVD the three of them prepare various healthy burgers and fries, highlighting various products used to construct these very healthy items. He shows the various products as well as gives many ingredients for some, highlighting their appropriateness to this project. The recipes are simple and quick to prepare as I demonstrated to myself at lunch today. My wife and I made the Mexican Burgers and the time to make them and cook them up was about 13 minutes till they were on our plates hot and ready.
These particular burgers basically contained kidney and pinto beans, rolled oats, brown rice and spices. They formed easily and cooked up nicely. We topped them with onion, tomato, and lettuce. They were delicious and knowing what went in them brought a large measure of confidence when eating them. Speed and taste are my two priorities behind healthyness and these filled the bill nicely. The other burger configurations would have been just as easy as once you master the basic recipe the rest are simply variations of a few items and spices.
I encourage those of you looking for quick, healthy food choices to have on hand. These will be popular with kids, too. This is going to be a staple for us on camping trips from now on. They can be made up at the house, tossed in the cooler and pulled out for a meal over a campfire or on the grille.
Great work Jeff on a disk that should be in everyones library. Since I bought this second disk before seeing the original one I am now going to get the original Fast Food disk.

Thanks F1jim. I have the Fast Food DVD and found it very useful. I've been wanting to expand my horizons with bean burgers, so the timing of this new DVD is perfect.

Where can I get it?

I looked at Jeff's site / Vegsource and McD store and did not see it.

Thanks,

Maybe you haven't refreshed your browser. I recently got an e-mail from vegsource saying that they are now shipping the DVD and here it is in their store:

I too had a veggie burger for lunch. I just made the basic burger and put it on a bed of manoa lettuce, fresh from the garden with a few leaves of fresh basil, some slices of maui onion, green pepper and tomatoes, with mustard and catsup. Thumbs up, bottom boom. Loved the classic line about the Mothra twins. This DVD would be a big hit in Japan, great competition to McDonalds.

Aloha, patty

I have converted my wife from the store bought black bean burgers to several variations of Jeff's recipe made up of 4 or 5 ingredients. We both love them and as Jeff points out, they are whole foods, cheap and easy to make! :)

This sounds great, I'm anxiously awaiting my copy, ordered a couple of weeks ago along with his first fast food dvd. With summer coming, it will be good to have the burger-type meal without much prep time. The store-bought bean burgers are quite expensive.

Even though I'm currently sick with the flu, making up a batch of these basic burgers *was* quick and easy, except after 5 days of coughing 3 with a fever, as I'm weak as a kitten and had as much trouble mashing the beans as the girls did, so hubby took over that job. I never thought to put the lid on food in the griddle pan and wow! It did make a big difference, and I almost burnt the first side. I'm so glad I set a timer for 2 minutes! Our *only* complaint about the food is that these burgers are too filling, and never in a million years did hubby and I ever think we would say THAT about any burger! We each ate only 1 and had the second for dinner. They're just as great reheated in the microwave after a few hours in the fridge.

As for the video itself, I really wish Jeff Nelson had pulled the blinds or did *something* to block out the glare from the sun coming in those windows behind Jeff Novick. For a while there I thought JJ Abrams was directing and was including his signature "lens flare" effect in every shot on purpose as he did in Star Trek. LOL

My respect for Jeff jumped up yet another notch when he did his bit on the cinematic history of that god of Infant Island! What made it especially fun was that this past month or so we've been on a Toho kick and have been getting all the old Godzilla movies, and just Friday after watching Godzilla vs the Sea Monster commented that it looks like Mothra has to fly in and save the Big Guy's butt in every movie now.

You can see the original Mothra Fairies (a.k.a. The Peanuts, a pop duo in Japan) sing their iconic song here:

There was some other thing he did later in the video, started singing the jingle from some commercial from our younger years (Forget what it was now) and as he did I I yelled at the tv that it was before their time and sure enough, they both looked at him like he was weird.

Thanks, Jeff, for another great video.

They really hid it on the VegSource site. He made the mistake of naming it Part 2 in the Fast Food series, so VegSource has it listed on the far left not under Jeff's videos but in the Jeff's Fast Food video link.

But I'm sure it'll be sold through the McDougall web site soon - they always are. :)

I hope you are feeling better. I used the food processor to mix and added the liquid type ingredient after. And they held together beautifully. I think the trick is not to over food process and of course following Jeff's suggestions of what ingredients and amounts. And you are so correct about the burgers being totally filling.. and what's so great is there is no in-between meal cravings. Yesterday I had burgers for lunch and dinner after dinner a bowl of oatmeal for desert.

Mahalo for the link... will watch it with a Mothra friend this morning:) You know how they say "Wow, I would love to eat with you" I think watching movies with you would have the same effect. Your joy jumps through the screen. You take virtual thought to a new vibrancy.

So happy I got the DVD... Mahalo again, patty

I am on the fence about ordering the DVD -- I regularly make my own veggie burgers from Jeff's recipe he has posted here (with some of my own tweaks, of course!). Does the DVD add anything to that basic recipe that makes it worth the $$?

Thanks!

Sharon

All the burger recipes are adaptations of the basic recipe using s few different ingredients and many different spices. The DVD also goes into making healthy "fries" as well. I looked at it as a jump off point for experimenting as well as something to show those that might have an interest in "fast food" options that kids will eat. Hard to say if it will justify the price for you. For me it's gold. Just like a good cookbook. I found the little tips like shaping the burgers worth the price of admission.

Thanks for the review of this DVD. I am waiting for his first Fast Food DVD to come in. Vegsource appears on the slow side. I also limit my first order and held off on this new one. Glad to hear some positive on the video.
