This may be off topic:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2002/ ... e.research

In "American The Beautiful" Urvashi Rangan (Toxicologist at Consumer Reports) said the that since it's inception the FDA in the USA has banned 6 ingredients in cosmetics while the FDA in the European Union has banned 450 ingredients.

It would be interesting to know if part of the reason cancer rates are higher in western countries was due to ingredients in skin care products etc.

Does anyone know anything about this?

Well when you look at ingredient's list of 99% of cosmetics you can see that it's all mostly chemicals - preservatives, talc, sulfur dioxide, parabens, aluminium, titanium dioxide, palm oil... the list is endless! And if using jars and jars of the stuff over time I believe it will have an effect.

What you put on your skin sinks in! I also like the quote, "If you wouldn't eat it, don't put it on your skin."

If you do your research you'll find that there are now alot of cosmetic companies that are plant-based and affordable. Rosehip oil and coconut oil are great moisturizers.

If that were true we would see a marked difference in cancer rates by gender. There may be differences but I don't believe they are that different. We could also see differences between countries that follow their usage of skin care products. Seems, on the surface, like it's an area of little concern i the big picture of cancer exposure.

I was thinking the same thing. All the people I could think of who've gotten skin cancer are men. So, I googled it.
http://www.cancer.org/acs/groups/conten ... cerpdf.pdf "Men are more likely to develop non-melanoma and melanoma skin cancers than women."

Of course, when I thought of cosmetics, I thought of skin cancer first. :duh: But how about other cancers? Glancing at this http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/hus/hus10.pdf#047 it appears men get more cancer.

The skin is a protective organ. That's why it's there. Perhaps its integrity can be compromised or damaged, but I tend to think that in general more danger with toxins probably comes from inhaling or ingesting them. The immune system over all is important, as is diet. I could be wrong. Am I? I don't know. Just my thoughts on a Sunday morning avoiding rocket science.

From the article:
Quote:
Erickson admits it is too early to know with certainty how serious the long-term impact could be on health, but warns that hormone-disrupting chemicals may lurk in cosmetics which could lower immunity to disease and cause neurological and reproductive damage.

I use as few cosmetics as I feel I can get away with and still look good.

As far as gender differences in cancer rates go though, even if men are not using makeup as women do, most still use shampoos, conditioners, toothpastes, soaps, colognes, deodorants, hair dyes, lotions and other skin care products which could easily contain ingredients similar to those found in women's cosmetics.

And there could be problems other than cancer from long term use of these products. Who knows? As with food, I read labels and do my best to avoid certain additives, because really, we don't know if they can cause harm later.
