From a San Diego UT article today, On July 1, 2012 foie gras as currently produced will be banned for sale in CA because of the inhumane treatment of ducks and geese which are forced fed to quickly fatten them. Foie is made from duck and geese livers. John Burton the former Senator from San Fransisco carried the orginal legislation and Arnold Schwarzenegger backed it. The bill was signed in 2004 giving producers until 2012 to come up with a more humane alternative, which apparently hasn't happened. 100 chefs have come together to fight the legislation. One chef said he is opposed to government telling him what he can serve. Really? Doesn't local government control liquor licences, thereby controlling who can and can't sell alcohol? How about certain meats such as horse or dog, doesn't the government control the sale of those meats by banning them? Perhaps this chef and others with the same opinion should go work in 3rd world countries where there are no government bans on food, good luck trying to sell your $15 foie gras appetizers there.
