When I tell people what I eat - plant based, whole foods diet with no added oils...I always get the following responce:

No oil? What about olive oil, isn't that good for you? What about fish oil? What about this oil or that oil? Oil is good for you!! OMG the sky is falling!

This happened to me a couple weeks ago.... "so what about olive oil and coconut oil? You know, coconut oil is good for you, the unhealthy kind is hydrogenated coconut oil..." I replied that's a lot of marketing and that I can't eat it because of my health issue, it usually comes to that so that the person isn't feeling targeted - that it's *my* issue, not theirs.

I think the next time I hear some one say "I'd rather die than give up X." I'm just might respond, "you might get your wish!" :D There's dumb and then there's just plain stupid.

Had another one today. Geez. Friend was telling me about going to Hershey Park with his daughter on a school field trip.

Me: Chocolate is hard to resist. Meat and dairy are no problem, but chocolate is tough.
Friend: Chocolate isn't vegan?
Me: Some of it is, but very little of it is low fat.
Friend: You've got to change. That just isn't healthy.
Me: hahaha
Friend: ....
Me: Oh! You were being serious?
Friend: Yes.

This morning I was buying a bunch of bananas and a couple of cans of beans. I was waiting in line at cash minding my own business when the guy in front of me say's "Bananas are bad for your waistline."
I was sort of dumbstruck by the comment. I looked down at my waist and said "I seem to be doing alright". Then I said "There are far worse things for your waist than bananas".
He said "oh yeah carbs, like rice, beans, grains..."
I chuckled and told him that that was all I ate and I seem to be doing just fine.
He then said that he can't eat carbs because they make him gain weight, like when he gets a loaf of bread and eats the whole thing.
Before I could stop myself I blurted out "Sir, the problem is not carbs, the problem is that you eat the whole loaf!"
I felt kind of bad after I said that, but then again, he started it.

LOL! That and what he was probably putting on the loaf! Could have told him to read the Starch Solution and he'd change his mind about carbs and starches!

It is hard to hold back sometimes isn't it!

I went to a social in our church hall last Saturday, it was a quiz to raise money for Christian Aid, the refreshments served were cakes and tea.

The very large elderly lady opposite me said to everyone on our table, I'm diabetic and I've already had a piece of cake today. She then went and helped herself to 2 pieces of cake. There was cake left over and someone came round dishing out more pieces so she had another!

Just incase you are wondering I did not have any!

Sue

I had the same oil conversation with a co-worker. He asked about me losing so much weight and I told him that I cut out all oils from my diet, and he said, "Even olive oil?" I'm going to have to add a line to the "Where I get my protein from" cards that I keep in my wallet to hand out, "Yes, even olive oil..." :D

I know, I know! He already left the store by the time I thought of that! Agh, I'm so dense sometimes!

This is what cracks me up about these kinds of conversations - people butting in as though WE imposed on THEM by doing what we are doing. And it is usually the other way around - I tend not to say much unless asked - but people have no problem spouting off about what they *know* you should be doing, because they read it in SELF or on msn.com.

I was volunteering at the electronics flea market last Saturday, and there is a tent where people can get donuts and coffee. I couldn't believe how many people asked for a donut without sprinkles "because I am diabetic and the sugar isn't good for me." :duh:
