I have one of the fancy Japanese "fuzzy logic" ones. I use mine daily for oatmeal using 9 minutes on the timer. Comes out perfect, doesn't boil over or stick to the pan, and if I forget about it for a few minutes, it automatically switches to "keep warm" setting after the cook time is up. It's one appliance I truly miss when I'm away from home.

Of course I use it for rice too.

This particular steamer I have at my office kitchen which means I can cook hot food....where there is no stove.

For the same reason I travel with a smaller rice steamer. I can cook many things in hotels...from oatmeal to cut up potatoes and carrots to...well....RICE!

Riva, so you bought the Miracle Exclusives rice cooker, and it cooks as good as it looks? I assume its easy to clean simply by soaking for 30-50 minutes -- the way we did the olden days.

Spider, tell me about cooking brown rice in the oven. How much water to rice, what temperature, and how long? I live the concept!

I just ordered this one from amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000PC3G7M/ref=oh_o00_s00_i00_details

It's stainless steel, not aluminum or teflon. My current one is teflon. Plus the new one is 8-cup, and my current one is only 3-cup, which isn't sufficient since I've gone to the McD WOE and eat lots more rice.

Plus the one I have now has all kinds of fancy features which I've never used. And just what the heck is fuzzy logic anyway? I don't like the idea of my rice cooker using logic. I don't want my kitchen applicances being smarter than me!

That's it, I'm in!

I want a rice cooker NOW...I love brown rice. I've been eating a lot of it every day, and I want perfect brown rice.

I don't think I can wait until Christmas (I was going to ask for it as a gift). Thank you all so much for the brand names, links and explanations.

You are just the nicest, most helpful folks I've ever seen on any forum. Bet when Dr. M's book comes out, this forum will be flooded!

In the islands everyone has a rice cooker:) I use a pressure cooker and rice turns out perfectly. There was a article in the paper where a woman shared she made all her one pot meals with a rice cooker. And how easy is that? So enjoy:)

Aloha, patty

I wound up purchasing the "shiny" stainless steel, Tatung 3-cup Indirect Heating Rice Cooker for $55 at Amazon. This unit is solidly built, and works great for white or brown rice. The rice does not burn on the bottom. Soak for 30 seconds afterwards, and it cleans in 10 seconds as if it were teflon coated. After two weeks use, I'm happy with the cooker.

I do not own one but wish I did have one. It makes a LOT of sense to own one for a Mcdougaller. People that have good ones, swear by them and I see why.

Yeah, you should get one, but get a decent one.

I had tried practically every rice cooker out there, none of which could cook brown rice properly. After changing all my cooking pots from aluminum to stainless steel, I looked for a rice cooker that was stainless. A lot of them say they're stainless, but the cooking pot is aluminum or Teflon.
I finally found the Miracle rice cooker, which has a stainless steel pot. I ordered it directly from the company at the time because the only ones offered on Amazon were more expensive. I've been using it for several years and love it. For brown rice, I add a little more water than the line on the pot indicates, and it makes perfect rice every time.

After going through a number of traditional rice cookers (teflon coated such as the Zojirushi) and having to replace them every couple of years when the coating was scratched, we too bought a Miracle rice cooker. I'm much more comfortable with the stainless steel than the aluminum cooking pots. After cooking and removing the rice, we put a small amount of water in it to soak off any that is stuck to the bottom. I put this bit in a separate container in the freezer, the same one where I save bits of oatmeal soaked off the breakfast pan. When the container is full, I defrost it and blend it along with steamed vegetables to make a "cream" soup. Works great. In fact, I've got cream of asparagus soup in the freezer now that I think I'll defrost for dinner...

My sister told me she was getting a rice cooker, and I thought that was a ridiculous waste of money. She quickly got tired of it and passed it on to me. I'm surprised I even tried it, but after the first use, knew it was for me. The rice always comes out perfectly - you don't have to watch it at all, it cuts off when the water is absorbed. I love it!

Had one and got rid of it. If I cook white rice I use a pot on the stove - quick and simple. When I cook brown rice I cook it in the oven - again very simple.

I got a cheap rice cooker (something like a Rival or bottom-of-the-line Panasonic) as a wedding gift 17 years ago, and loved it. It made perfect rice every time. When I lost the lid, I replaced it with another inexpensive one from Black and Decker, which I hated because it made a huge mess.

Finally I broke down and got a fuzzy logic cooker after reading so many rave reviews about them on this board. I use it several times a week. I got one that steams and also works as a slow cooker, and let me tell you it has been worth every penny. Perfect rice every time. Perfect polenta. Perfectly steamed veggies and potatoes. And a perfect slow cooker for smaller dishes.

It's a great size for our family of three. I did a lot of research on types, reviews, etc before purchasing. Here's the specific model in case you are interested: Sanyo ECJ-HC100S 10-Cup (Uncooked) Micro-Computerized Rice Cooker and Slow Cooker.

I wish it were available with a steel liner but it isn't. I figure that eating the whole foods WILL do more to help than eating from a good-quality non-stick pan MIGHT do to possibly hurt.
