Is kombucha allowed? Also, what about fermented foods i.e. sauerkraut, pickles etc. :-)

Huh? I am going to assume that Didi simply does not like fermented foods. You are allowed to eat them on the McDougall plan, but be aware of how very salty they are and eat them sparingly.

Oops! You are probably correct. I was responding to the fermented foods part of the question, real foods, not quasi-food/supplements. :D

Thank you for your replies. Since it isn't forbidden, I'll continue to drink Kombucha as I have for many years. I'm 78 and still vertical so I don't think I'll worry about a coma from drinking it. :D

I know it isn't recommended but it helps my belly and I like it. It is a form of drinking calories so as long as I keep that in mind I think it is fine.

I am an avid kombucha drinker & brewer, I had to stop production for awhile, due to crazy work hours/travel/ and a kitchen remodel gone south. But I can tell you from experience, if the bucha has mold, you'll see it on the top, you know when it's bad. And if you are buying it, I've never heard of any illness reported from a commercial brand. For all intensive purposes, its tea and probiotics. (You use sugar to brew it, and the scoby eats the sugar) So the result is a fizzy drink full of probiotics, and low or no sugar. Keeps my tummy in check too! I don't see anything wrong with it, and I think it fits this lifestyle just fine, but that's just my 2 cents.

I had to stop drinking Kombucha as it caused "intestinal distress" if you know what I mean. I never made my own, but I am not willing to try if the ones I purchased in the health food store sent me to the bathroom too many times a day.
