My moment of truth came on a flight to Florida for a chemistry conference in Orlando. First, getting into the seat was a challenge, then I had to strain to get the seatbelt fastened. I was too proud to ask for an extender, so I squeezed the belt under my belly and over my legs. It's a wonder I didn't get a blood clot! That was a real wake-up call.
Later in the conference, they were giving away free mugs with your picture on them. When I saw my picture stretched across the front of the mug I nearly cried. God, I never realized just how fat I was until then. I threw the mug away when I got back to my hotel room. Now I wish I had kept it as a reminder of the moment that finally triggered my new life.
